Well i just bought a Yamaha sx viper

That's one nice looking viper. I didn't know there was a black/white color combination, I'm jealous haha.

sweet looking ride. best bang for the buck HAS to be clutching it. look in my signature to see the most common one people do. ne real downside, I noticed more pull everywhere and more mpg. after that, just ride it and grease it, and repeat!

That viper that you have is considered an "ER" because of the electric start and reverse. That was the color combo/ option package for the ER sled... I bought my first ER with 500 miles on ebay when it was only 1 year old.. Some dealer took it as a demo for a weekend in the UP!!!! After riding my 2002 and 2003 viper with my wife (riding the 04) up in MUNISING. I traded with her on the trail and DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE IT BACK!!!! OH MY GOD did it take the bumps and feel 100% different than my 2002 and 2003 viper!!! Needless to say,,,,, I sold the 2002 and the 2003 viper and BOUGHT ANOTHER 2004 ER viper!!!! NOW I HAVE 2 OF THEM and I WILL NEVER trade them for a 4 stroke!!!!! WELCOME to YAMAHA.. i read your first post and it said about trying to get more power than SKIDOO..... YOU DON'T HAVE TO WORRY about MORE POWER!!!!! You're riding the BEST SLED in the WORLD!!!!!! CONGRATS!!!!!!! Gary Oles nosboy

Yea, i have to say, it rides on the trails VERY smooth, i took it on about 300 KMs on the weekend, and it was the best 300 KMs i have ever riddin! plenty of power, a real head turner! either when i hit the gas with that bender can triple sound, or its the black, you usually see blue, or red, and then you see this black one.
OR
Its just both!
Either in the summer, i may do some clutching, and or triple bender pipes. maybe get a little more power out of this thing, but i doubt i will do the pipes. they mess around with the gas mileage big time.

how much did you pay for it???? I bought my first one for 5700.00 with 500 miles and my second one for 4000 with 1800 miles.... the second one I bought 14 months ago , (new years day 2006) from a guy in New York.... Yamaha didnt make a LOT of these sleds and they are HARD TO GET!!!!! ENJOY!!!

I did put a 3 inch handlebar riser on mine because my BACK HURTS riding all day....

Well the prices in Canada are far from the price of the american sleds, they american sleds go for a cheaper price, but i spent 3500 for the 04, and it has 5700 miles on it.
but its not hard miles, the guy that owned it before never really rode it very hard. you could eat off this engine!

also this engine has a bender can, and i'm debating on bender pipes. what are your opinions?

Another good thing about the '04 vipers is the nice plushy seat-- compared to the 02's and 3's

Yes, its a VERY nice seat! i love the seat + suspension set-up, it adds up to a very good trail riding machine!

I would avoid pipes, too much trouble. lots of extra power for sure, but you will have a time trying to keep it together and have real poor mpg

Ive raced sleds on asphalt and I also have a racecar,,,so,,, I FIRMLY BELIEVE in leaving a stock sled ALL STOCK!!!! I never had good luck with just a "few" mods and I never know when to stop... I SAVE MY MONEY for racecar parts!!!!! my 04 viper goes FAST ENOUGH for ANY TRAIL or hill that I come across.. I ride in the northwoods,,,, and you cant go over 55 anywhere!!!!! I've heard that a clutch mod is the way to go,,, and my viper came with a clutch mod from the previous owner,,, but I dunno what mod was done....

I see after 5000 miles + the yamaha viper holds up really well, thats a great quality sled.
I look at other brands after some miles and they look like crap. I think im going to look for another viper !

nah, just do it yourself. 53/43 multi angle helix and a green secondary spring. makes a nice and noticeable difference :)

Hey, now! almost 5000 miles on my Bender piped 02' and she runs like a clock and still manages about 10-11 mpg! Can't say it would be worth it though if I was doing one again as our single pipe S seems to run just as hard up to normal trail speeds. The triple pipes add some serious top end, but it is a heck of a lot of mods to do it right and have one that is reliable. Single pipe sure is better on fuel and probably has a little bit better bottom end. Other than the triple pipe power, my wifes 04' hands my 02' its butt! Amazing how much nicer the S rides.

Leave the engine alone and concentrate on good clutching, suspension setup and traction. Enjoy!
