I recently sized my SXViper MTN motor. This of course sent a hair line crack through the center of the lower case. Crack is very small less than 1 inch on the bottom case and not in a bearing area. How successful is welding a case? Some folks tell me to purchase new cases while other guys say they have welded with success. My first post. :o|

I know you could weld it no problem, but I hope you don't mind me asking a question on your thread which i'm sure you will be interested in the answer too. Anyway, My question is... if the motor seized and cracked the case, this would mean that enough force was put to the case to distort it enough to crack, now would that mean that the case could now be out of spec and cause faster wear on the crank? should it be checked by a machine shop or would it be no big deal? I know some people have welded cases like this with no problems so I guess I just answered my own question, but does that sound realistic?

I have come across another set of cases where the center crank bearing also sized but did not lock up the motor as mine did. I will tear this one apart this weekend. I have rebuilt jet ski motors but never a sled motor. Hope it all goes well, so far I have $600 invested in the crank rebuild, plus new pistons. By the way I plan to use SPI pistons they come recommended they are coated pistons. Keep your recommendations coming, I need all the help I can get.

The viper cranks came welded from yamaha. You can have the cases welded. I would also check the cases for straitness.

Thanks guys, I got my hands on another Viper motor that also has the center rod bearing at the crank worn out. The water pump on this motor will not just slide off. Any tricks to getting this one off. Already broke off one pump fin. I might build up a second bottom end since I have a few spare parts now.
