I have a 98MM.....6000km.....Reeds "look" good, not chipped or cracked, but they don't seem to form a great seal on the block. Like the tension is all gone. Is this normal for them to lose their strength after time??? I'm guessing all I need to do is purchase new petals???

I can't remember how mine were when I changed them...You're sure you've got them back together just right?

never been apart. Theoretically the reeds should close on every cycle but if they don't seat 100%, wouldn't there be leakage back into the airbox?
The machine runs great, but the carb inlet and the airbox had quite a bit of backwash. That's why I'm guessing the reeds.

Oil residue it normal. We had a thread on this recently, and I posted my thought on it. It stands to reason that when you shut a machine off, the gas/oil/fuel mixutre that's in suspension and traveling through the carbs and intake tract will slam to a stop or even be pushed back through as the engine comes to rest. Interesting, I think!
Bad reeds have specific symptoms, and if they're visually ok, then your probably fine. If I pull my carbs this fall, I'll check mine and see if the petals rest on the cage...
