Has anybody ever seen a set of reed stoppers that cracked? If so what is the cause?
I pulled mine tonight on the cyclinder that has been giving me trouble and I found both top and bottom reed stoppers were cracked up. I didn't loose any into the crank, but left unchecked I'm sure they would have gone in.
The petals are good but the stoppers were bad.
I welded them up but and wondering if I should put them back in like this or not?
Anyone ever run into this situation?

Did it ever backfire on you, like a real big one...thats what happened to mine...one time after a long pull down a railbed & a quick shut down & BANG it just never ran right...alone with bad gas/meltdown, I got into a rebuild & found one of my peddals half missing and most of my stoppers out of specs...

No big backfires. I had a small one shortly after a rebuild this summer. But my petals are fine. It was just the stoppers that were crackes. Bizare!!!

I've had that in my 700 and my 600 twin. I had found a thread once where a bunch of guys had seen the same thing. When I ordered them from my dealer the parts guy said it was the first time he'd ever sold any.

Supposedly the replacement stoppers from Yamaha are stainless steel. Unlike the originals.

Nope I never had any performance issues from them. I noticed it when I pulled them out to notch the stoppers to open up the port above them.

I had one crack two years ago. Had to order the new ones as the dealer also had never seen one break before. The new one was stainless as mentioned. This is why I wouldn't ever want to do the stopper notch mod in place of spacers, that $60-70 will look cheap after you take out a cylinder, head, piston, and maybe the case/crank.
I run v-force now so it's no longer an issue for me, but it might be cheap insurance to replace them all with the new style. Just my $.02
