Rough clutch engagement?

95 V-Max. Clutch does not engage smooth. I've watched it engage with the clutch cover off. The sheaves grab the belt with a pretty good thunk. I know it's not the chain or the secondary. Rough engagement is only from a dead stop when I get into the throttle slowly. It has done this for a while now with both the stock clutch and a new Comet. Any ideas? Could it be a clutch alignment issue?

Thanks, FishX65

Primary is brand new. I Tried a couple different belts that where within spec. Any other ideas?

Whats the belt deflection? And if it's a new Comet as you said what is the belt side clearance? If your engagement is correct and it jerks or slams in that is what will cause it.

Daman, I'll check center to center this weekend. The good book says it should be at 10.5 to 10.6 inches from center to center. How many miles do you get out of your v-max belts? I know the width has to be 33mm to 35mm but can the length of the belt stretch that much over time? Would a stretched belt cause this problem? I never did measure the lengths of the belts I was trying.

No, i've never had a OEM belt stretch, i get many many seasons outa a
oem belt.

Still have my original 8DN belt on my 00 vmax with 12000km on it and still in good condition even if I run it sometimes with very agressive clutch setup.

I use the 89L belt on my 600. Center-center and deflection are correct and I think the sled has used 4 belts in 8600 miles. The one that is in there now has 1000 miles on it and looks new still.

The belts don't stretch. They wear out from the sides and get narrower. The motor could shift on the mounts bringing it out of spec. And the jack shaft bearing could fail but you would know that in a real hurry.

One thing not mentioned yet is has someone lubricated your Yamaha clutch? It should be clean and dry.

No lube on the Comet. Just a thin layer of molly on the weight faces when I put it together. I just thought of something else: When the sled is stopped, the belt is touching the fixed sheave but there is a little gap between the belt and the sliding sheave. Does this sound right? If not, I could move a shim from the front of the secondary to the back. This would put the belt in the middle of the primary.
