Can engine case be welded successfully?

I have a 2001 V-max 500 that the starter ring gear came off the clutch and damaged the upper case, very minor crack by crank seal, is it possible to weld the case? If so what else would have to be done?

Can you post a few high res pictures? By the sound of it you could probably weld it but may need to have it machined after depending on how bad / where the crack is.
