Hey guys, 2 questions, Can anyone help ?
1.
What is the best and quietest set of triple pipes on the market for an 02 viper ? I live in Wisconsin and the DNR is cracking down on loud sleds, we have a new law about how many decibles a sled can put out. (don't know the # off hand.)

2.
I have 2- 2002 vipers, 1 I ride a lot and it runs great. The second one is my x -girlfriends, ( I bought from her when we split up) It has 1300 miles on it, The problem is, when I ride and come to a stop the engine keeps idling really high around 4000rpm's then it will finally settle down.(30 to 45 seconds) Is this dirty carbs, reeds , or power valves ? sleds are fogged, gas drained and stored inside all year, they are well maintained , but I haven't really rode this one in 2 years, anybody got some ideas for me ?

welll if you havent ridin it in 2 years, I'd go through and clean the carbs first of all. Then as for your idle riding high... you are running a little too lean on your fuel screws. Turn the fuel screws on the bottom of your carbs out in 1/4 turn increments until your idle is normal

I think my pender pipes sound nice and are not very loud. Some of the sleds here with cans are louder.
The high idle is a lean condition. Turn the fuel screws out 1/4 or 1/2 turn. That should fix it. First see where they are. If there're already out past 2 1/4 turns out you may need bigger pilot jets. I have mine set at 2 turns and the idle still hangs a bit. I usually just burp the throttle and it comes down. Or give it a little choke.

Well, next time you go out riding when you come to a stop and it is doing this blip the choke for a sec and see if it quits....I bet it does! This is a common thing and the fuel screws need to be opened up. Use the search tool on the upper right and search hanging idle....Tons of reading.....Furthermore...you should be cleaning your carbs EVERY year and you should be cleaning your power valves one to two times a year as normal mantaince. If you do these things your viper will run for year;)!

As far as i know SLPs are the absolute quietest.

Not a pipe guy, i'm a stock guy but i can help ya with no 2..lol

pull your carbs off(need to do that anyway to clean)then underneath
you'll find your fuel screws(pilot screws) turn them 2 out from seat
should help..stock is 1 7/8

Not to jack this thread, but here is an interesting one for you. My piped Viper at idle runs rich enough that it soaks the plugs at idle (even fouled a couple), but after a long 4000' pull on a rail bed it will hang the idle? Choke blip drops it back right away.

plus your pilots are too rich if your fouling plugs @ idle. I'm not bullshitting one bet when I say that I have NEVER fouled a plug with my SX-R!

Yah, I know the pilots are rich, which mean I shouldn't have a lean idle hang, right?

Your lean on the main....pipe is VERY hot after the 4000' run...creating alot of vacuum that drawas through carbs.

I don't think the mains are lean as my plugs look perfect, but I understand what you are saying. All the undissipated heat leans it out temporarily after a long pull. Quick splash with the choke cools everything off and it run normal.

The following link takes you to the plug reading I did at the low temp range of my jetting. Everything looks fine at 4*F and the sled will do the same thing when its 30*F.Plug Reading Post

I fought this exact same issue on a red head motor this year. It turned out to be the simplest thing. It came down to throttle cable and idle screw(not fuel screw/pilot/pilot screw) adjustment. I spent all kinds of time changing pilots. I made a set of remote fuel screw adjusters and it turned out to be lack of proper adjustment on the throttle cable and idle speed screw.

Turn your idle down some, mine did it too, carbs were spotless and cleaned yearly. It helped mine. Mines right around 1550rpm.

Turn your idle down it worked for me in 2002. Slp pipes their jetting for my altitude, The only difference I have is bigger nozzles than they said to run.

idle

thanks for all the info everyone, I will start by cleaning the carbs ,then cleaning the power valves, checking the throttle cable and the idle screw. We will see what happens from there. :winterrul

Update: Cleaned power valves, reset cable tension for throttle (found out it would pull when I turned the handlebars all the way to the right) backed off the idle screw a little, idles about 1600 now. No more hanging idle and runs fantastic !! Thanks for all the input ! great site!!
