I cleaned the carb & inspected the reeds (they were fine) and I can only still get 65mph (@ 6000rpm) out of my '80 SS440. Secondary spring is set at 150degrees and I seem to notice it kick-in at 40mph. Otherwise, it's pretty zippy up to about 50mph.
I have a Kimpex Super Pro belt in it now, I don't know if it can make a difference with regards to top end by using a higher end belt.
I recall getting at about 75/80mph (speedo reading) last winter.
Any thoughts?
Thx

try another belt, preferably a good yamaha belt
That's the next step. How does the secondary. spring setting seem (150deg)? ...with shifting at about 40mph.
It was right under my nose...I get 2 to 2-1/2 inches of belt deflection. The number on it is a 2706 (not the 1106 ref # in catalogues).
What's the c-c distance between clutches supposed to be?

There should be a sticker on the clutch guard or
under the hood with the information.
under the hood with the information.
c-c distance is within 0.040" + alignment is good + new belt = 70/75 mph on soft snow. I think that's good enough for now...it gets there PDQ !
Big thing I noticed is the ski (steel) drag - when I sit far back and unload the front it really jumps forward, when the skis get hopping around, it seems to jump another few mph.
Thx
