More viewing here so I hope to get some help (also posted in the Tech area)
Can I replace this bearing by only removing the secondary or does the chain case need to come apart?
Anybody know the generic bearing number/size for this one?
Part #16 in the pic

Could this bearing going bad cause me to have issues with my chain case?
I replaced the entire case, newer gears and chain, new bearngs in the case and I am still getting an odd noise and vibration. I could have swore I was hearing something on the clutch side and that's why I suspect this bearing with 11,000 miles on it. I replaced the case because I blew a chain.
Need to fix this quickly as I have 5 day ride in UP starting Fri.!
Thanks,
Al

I just went through the same thing. The bad new is that you are going to have to take the case off or at least take it loose and slide the case and shaft as far to the mag side of the engine bay as you can. You have to get the clutch end of the jackshaft through the aluminum frame strut that it goes through in order to remove the clam-shell that captures the bearing to slide the bearing off the shaft.
I tried to source this bearing through several bearing suppliers in the last two weeks. Everyone of them told me that they would not be available for at least the next 4-6 weeks so I ended up buying a new one from the Yamaha dealer - can you say OUCH! It was $42.

chaincase needs to be pulled away from the jack shaft. The bearing and the bearing housing will come off from the chain case side. It is about a 1 to 1.5 hour job to replace. Air box come out, drain chaincase, open the chain case seperate the case from the motor, slide the bearing and housing off the chaincase side and install the new bearing.

Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Not a big deal since I have had the case on/off twice in the last 3 months, just a waste of fluid with only 100 miles on it and time.
Called Port, they had a bearing in stock, $25 plus shipping, should be to me by Wens. if I am lucky, which is good enough since I don't leave until Fri..

Yamyrider, (or someone) Could you provide me with the number off the actual bearing. I may be able to procure some of those.

the bearing is a standard NTN 6204 bearing with a colar on it with 2 set screws. I purchase bearings from a local bearing supplier for about $6.00 here in Ontario.

What do you do about the collar part?

I think the set screws are on the collar, its a common bearing from the local parts store.I was going to get the bearings from carquest for about 6-7 bucks, but I thought they seemed cheap and were made in china I believe so I was not confident they'd hold up as good as yamaha bearings do.I bought mine through Port also. They are definetely cheaper than some other dealers!

Royal Distributing in Ontario carries NTN replacements. You should have someone local that carries NTN.

No offense guys, but this is not a common bearing at all. It is not used in the USA very much. It has an aspherical outer race and the set screw collar.
The NSK number is AS205LL - XV18 which uses UB205 seals.
I did have some cross reference numbers for it a while back that I will look for and post if I find.
While there is nothing wrong with buying Yamaha service parts, remember that Yamaha does not make bearings, they simply spec the usage of them. They use a lot of NSK bearings. Beyond the type and size of bearing there are a number of things like tolerance, play, and of course seal types that make them a lot different in actual application. I had way too many hours spent learning stuff about bearings that I will never need.
The PFL205 bearing holder is also made by NSK. Replace it too if ther is any damage to it at all.
