My brother in law has an M-10 in his 97 700 sx. While comparing his to my 98 w/m-10, I immediately noticed a major difference in the way his m-10 was mounted vs mine.

The front arm of his m-10 is mounted in the original front proaction mount holes. The forward most holes. The arm is mounted directly to the tunnel, he doesn't have those large alum supports.

The rear arm is mounted in the original rearward most holes.

There are no tunnel support plates in his tunnel.

Was this the correct way to mount an m-10 back in 1997? Or did the guy who installed the m-10 just hack it. What would be the disadvantage of using the holes for the proaction skid?

I think BETHEVIPER may have the answer to this. For some reason I remember reading that if you use an RX1 or some other mount kit, you can just use the stock front holes and just mess with the rear holes a little... makes a faster installation. Providing this is true (which you better not hold me to this lol) If what I said is correct and the geometry is still fine there isn't really any advantages from one to the other. I would try PM'ing BETHEVIPER or wait and see if he verify's what I just mentioned.
