I am looking for a little help i have a 99 sx 600 it has around 10,500 miles on the orignal motor it runs great very strong never fouls plugs my problem is when i fuel up i use about 7.5 to 8.0 gals of fuel in 100 miles but i use between 2 to 2 and a half quarts of oil at every fuel up my buddys viper gets the same gas milage but he uses about 1 quart to every other fuel up is this a major problem and where do i start i herd that the cablehas to be routed perfect in a certain way where would that be so i can check to make sure it is in the right place

Read this thread I have had to take the slack out of all 3 of my sleds throttle cables. My 2000 SX700R was burning a lot of oil last year and removing the slack cured it for me. :2strokes:

I have the very same sled. I backed my oil pump off by about 1/4 of the stock setting about 6,000 miles ago and have not had a problem even at -10F. I now use about the same about of oil as your buddies viper.

up to a point more oil is better for longevity. But if it anything like mine, it uses far too much oil. In my case my oil pump is throwing far too much oil into the cylinders, fouling plugs from time to time. Adjusting the cables as described above did nothing to my excessive oil consumption.

did you have the oil pump updated on yours horkn? my 97 600 let go and it really ate the oil

I think it is the original pump. I hear the original part was known to fail, and a new part # was created to solve this.

We just bought the sled this Fall, so I don't know the entire background on the venture.

I will replace it with a new updated part this summer/ fall. It currently uses a lot more that 1 qt per 100 miles.

I think it used a quart of oil per 85 miles last outing. I have not done the math, but I know that is far too much. My first year 600 VES polaris uses a lot less oil than that, and they were known to be oil hungry.

there was a problem with some '97 pumps, so horkon if you backed off
your pump some and she's drinking it still do your pump..

sounds like mine when the pump went. should be able to call a dealer with the vin and see what was done for updates/recalls

doh, never thought of using the VIN and checking for updates. But wasn't it a non warranty update (both the oil pump and the pistons)? Meaning the dealer may not have any record.

I figured I could cross reference part #s when I have it apart and that would tell me if they have been updated as well.

By just tightening almost all the throttle cable play out of my 2000 SX700R, I fixed it from drinking my Amsoil to sipping it at about 55:1 judging from my 200+ mile outing on Thursday. If this didn't help then I would think your oil pump is indeed shot like the others said.

I ran 50 miles today and only burned 4/10ths of a quart of Amsoil Interceptor and burned at least 5 gallons gas(Imp. gal)
