On the past weekend, was riding and when I put the brakes on full my tach would drop to zero and my display would blank out. When I came off the brakes the tach would do a full sweep and the display would come on. It happens when the brake is pressed, then I noticed if I pushed the brights on the tach would drop to zero and the display is gone until I take the brights off.

Does anyone know what would cause this to happen??

Famous wiring harness rub through...either below the motor or below the seat....many posts do a search.

Did a search and either rub through or stator. What does the stator control, as I have found my sled running rough with poor fuel economy.

I had the same exact problem with my sled this year. I've been through the harness under the motor and tank...twice. Also went through the steering column wiring. A new stator is sitting on my table waiting for me to have time to put it in. Several others had this problem, the stator has been the cure for most. I would still check the harness under the motor and tank, easy & cheaper fix if your lucky and that's it. Plus, you can put them in wiring loom and never worry about them again.

The stator generates voltage for the sled. If it is weak, it can't handle the load and draws it down. You said it is running bad, is it really bad in the mid-range? Mine was doing this, and then I realized the hand warmers weren't working at all and turned them off. The sled started running good after they were turned off. Verified by turning them back on, bogging was back. The low voltage has to be causing the cdi to not work properly. Might not be a bad test to make sure your warmers are off, maybe even unhook the headlights, and then see how it performs. I wouldn't run it much if it is bogging bad, don't want to damage the cdi. If it's your stator, you'll need a flywheel puller to get to it. My local dealer offered to loan me his to save me having to buy one, but I've been going there for years and know them pretty well. If you have a regular dealer you go to, it might be worth a try. The stator was $200, and took about six days to get.

Viper77 - I had the same problem, also when pushing Hi beams. I too checked all wiring but found no worn or bad spots. I narrowed it down to low voltage. Replaced the stator and all was back to normal. Have 700+ miles on it now with no further issues.

hmmm... great info guys, its making me wonder if i need to check my harness out, I lost hand and thumb warmers today while riding and for a little bit the brake light wasnt working (but tail light worked, if that makes sense). Didnt notice any bogging though... guess its time to get the multimeter out and start checking things...

Well, I just went and put the new stator in my sled. Not too bad of a job to do. I started it when done, no more gauge pod shutting off when hitting high/low beam or brake lever, and head light is bright again. I've read about so many Vipers having this problem this year, all except one has been the stator.
