hey guys i was looking ay yamaha literature about the vipers and they stated the power valves were self cleaning.if so how does it work?and secondly does it really self clean effectivly?

No it doesn't do it effectively,,,

all self cleaning is is every time you start
your sled the servo cycles the valves open and
closed to keep any carbon on the valve wore off..

you still need to pull them out and clean thoroughly by hand..

Clean Your Valves Manually Every 3-4 Weeks Or Buy Cables And Valves ...pick One . Atleast When You Do It You Know Exactly What Your Wear And Tear Is !!!! I Have Not Seen The Light In The Dash Board That Says Stop Now Your Cable Is Stretched ( Get The Picture)....

Just My Opinion

Alot depends on the oil you use, Different oils have different deposit build up.
I use the Amsoil full synthetic and I can go one season without cleaning, I probably could go more, since there is very minimal build up even then.
Do a search on oil brands, very informative.

PV's

Oil has nothing to do with it. I ran the expensive Amsoil and my PV's were nasty and gummed up just like they were when using Yamalube. Carbon is Carbon and two strokes make/produce carbon when burning oil. PV's need to be cleaned often or you will have issues regardless of the type of oil used.

so logically if a guy kept his jetting spot on the majority of the time via egt gage, there would be far less carbon to clean due to the engine running at peak efficiency, max exhaust temp, right?thats not to say they still wont need cleaning though i realize.just less

When I used yamalube mine had much more carbon and or build up on them since I switched oils. Yes they still get build up on them but not near as much or as sticky..

well, my center PV was leaking slightly, so time for some new gaskets. PV slid right out. minimal carbon build up. my sled has 5,000 miles on it, 4 seasons, run 1 oz ring free per tank, yamalube since day 1, and have never had the other PVs out of cylinders #1 and #3 to be cleaned. it still is running strong. ring free must be the trick cause i don't have near the issues everyone else seems to be having. hit 224 mph on dream meter this year so still have strong top end.

anyone else running ring free and what have been your experiences?

after reading all these posts on hear about cleaning PVs all the time, i was freaking out and have all the parts necessary to rebuild my 3 PVs so i was a little nervous when i took the one out. the mechanic that was there with me said that i didn't have to worry. also, we have another viper in our group that is running ring free and the other viper has 4,000 miles and no issues, never been cleaned.

beats me, but it seems to work???!!!

That does sound good....I don't mind the cleaning but I like the idea of less stress on my cables and no worries!!!!!
