I have a 1998 700XT, 8500 miles. I noticed a bad jackshaft bearing upon returning from a trip to Caribou Maine. This is the one on the left side behind the secondary clutch. I removed the jackshaft, recieved a new bearing (#93399-99943-00) and began to reinstall. Once I had the jackshaft slid through the chaincase and had the clam shell bearing holder tightened down on the left side I realized the jackshaft has a bit of play coming out from the side where the secondary clutch attaches. I'm assuming this should be a tight fit inside where the jackshaft slides through the bearing. The bearing is tight inside the holder. Does this indicate that the jackshaft is worn at that spot? And if so, do I need a new jackshaft? I'm guessing I know the answer to my question but I just wanted to confirm since a new jackshaft is $200.

You can commonly get a used jackshaft for under $50 too. Yes, if the bearing is allowed to go too long, the jackshaft takes a beating. It often heats up and either breaks or bends.
