As you can see in the picture all of my heads have a black coating on them. It is like a sticky oily film. I don't remember ever seeing this on my other SRX. What are your thoughts?

For some reason oil must be burning to the head. The residue is really sticky. Not like carbon build up or anything. Someone must have seen this before.
What kind of oil. Did you change anything recently. Is it using coolant at all. Maxdlx

I'm using Amsoil. It doesn't seem to be using any coolant. I just bought the sled and it is ported. What I have noticed is that it is hard to start(10-12 pulls cold) and it is very hard on gas(6-8mpg). I don't know it this has to do with the porting. My 98 SRX did not have this problem at all. The motor seems to run fine once its going but really doesn't feel much stronger than my older 98.

?All three heads have the sticky oily residue?
Separate pipes, separate carbs, right? If the heads all look the same and you have essentially three separate systems, statistics would rule out the individual components and point towards something in common. Porting. Jetting. Ignition. Timing. Oil pump setting. Oil brand choice.

Yeah, all three heads are the same. Oil pump was just adjusted. Sled is ported and also seems to be running a bit lean. Maybe a lean running engine will have this happen, not sure. I'm thinking it has to do with the porting. Maybe if I was running a bit richer than this residue would wash away. Kind of like piston wash.

Looks almost like Fogging oil....
Its on all 3 heads and on the exhaust side only. If its fogging oil then it burnt on really bad. This stuff couldn't be wipped off with your finger. Its really on there.

did you lean it out since the last time you looked? It's making heat now, thats carbon, it's normal.

Well, I think the sled is running a bit on the lean side. Its been this way since I got it but I kind of thought it might be running rich since its very hard on fuel. I popped the heads of and I see very little piston wash, actually none. I just thought it was strange that it was a very tacky substance. Its nothing like the carbon you would see on an exhaust valve etc. Do you think this is oil being baked onto the head from excessive heat(lean condition)?

JAY, YOU SEE THIS TACKY SUBSTANCE ON YOUR POWER VALVES ? 3:16 (yammie tony)
No, I don't see it on my pv's. On the valves its more like carbon. Its mostly harder and scraps or chips off. Any oil on the valves isn't tacky like the stuff on my heads.
