1987 Phazer, piped but otherwise stock. A few different issues here actually.
1)It fires right up in the morning 1 or 2 pulls. Once it is warm and I shut it down it takes a lot of yanking and fiddling with the choke to get it going again. When the sled was bought this season we didnt know how long since it had run so upon cleaning the carbs we found them to be super dirty with rust and gunk on everything. Ran it for a while then cleaned the carbs again and it didnt help the starting. The sled seems to run better and better the more gas we put thru it.
2)It also has a little trouble taking off from idle sometimes. If you go to half choke it will take off fine then go back to no choke. ??
3)The most recent problem happened yesterday it was running great then all the sudden it lost power and died. it was a really warm day and I think it just got too hot. We let it cool for a while and tried to start it, it started briefly a couple times then wouldnt do anything. We towed it back to the car.
Any ideas on anything here? What should I check when I tear into it today?

I might check the fuel pump. Check the EZ things first.

Is this a dumb question...what do I do to check the fuel pump? Pull a fuel line and yank the rope??

Check the compression, you may have scored a piston. If you don't have a compression tester, remove the exhaust Y pipe and look at the pistons.
It may have had some piston damage from the start. That will cause hard starting when warm.

Compression is right around 120 both cylinders. I went to work on why it would not start at all the yesterday and it fired right up 3 pulls. So it must have just been way too hot the other day. This doesnt affect the hard start when warm but at least it is running again.
