Hello,

New to this site! Record snowfall this year and I haven't ridded an SRX yet - 1 yr old boy at home and another on the way - no time!!

I acquired some basket-case SRX's at Haydays a few years ago. They came from a drag racer in Michigan. One of them is a '79 chassis with a '76 case & crank? with 8F2 cylinders and 8A7 heads. The other is a '76 chassis with '79 motor in it. Both sets of cylinders & pistons are boost ported.

Let's call it the 8F2 motor, comes out of the hole poorly (carbs too big?), but once it gets rolling - pulls very hard - as you can imagine. I've dragged it a few times and raced it at ER once or twice. Since the carbs were on the engine, I assumed it ran OK, but I have only made needle adjustments to try to lean it on the bottom end. Are the 44's just too big for good throttle response? The intake humps have not been removed. I bought a set of 40's to put on it and keep things simple, but I haven't got around to putting them on. We have (2) sets of no-name pipes that came with the package. Apparently they are tuned for a 500rpm difference.

I have a friend that is dusting-off a formerly successful '77 drag sled, and I would like to be respectable against him. His focus is clutching and gearing and claims the engine has been inpected many times at races to find that it's stock. I know that stock 77's are great, and maybe my engines have been ruined by too much modification, but I would like to get some insight on a reasonable combination for my engines and carburetors.

Also, I have a few sets of stock '76 pipes to try if race pipes aren't worth it.
I haven't measured the reace pipes to see how they compare to stock '77's.

Thanks,
Tim

I run 45.5's on my 76 340 machined out bottom end with 8HO mod cylinders with Dave Delaughters new 77 race pipes. I finally got it to run good with 440 mains and 40 pilots. Engaging at 6700 and runs 10,200 on top. Had problems with air cleaners and wrong belts with the stock 77 clutches. Sounds like you need some good mod pipes. Call Dave. He also has a webb site now.
