You mean the heat exchanger?
It is important to add protectors to the heat exchanger when you have studded the track.
one thing though, the Venture has a different bulkhead or tunnel than the sxr/ mtn and all other yamaha sleds.
On my 97 venture, which most will say is the exact same tunnel/ bulkhead as the sxr/ vmax/ mountian max, this is not the case, and as far as I know, every yamaha Venture up to the RS venture 4 stroke requires different heat exchanger protectors than the rest of the yami line up.
we bought 2 sets of HX protectors for SX chassis yamahas and both were too short, and would not work on our venture. The parts guy at Port Yamaha (local for me) explained that this was always an issue when studding the 2 stroke LC ventures. He said yamaha used to make a specific part, but they quit making it a long time ago.
I found a dealer northern wisconsin that had one of the original yamaha venture protectors left, and he uses that as a template to make duplicates for customers like myself.
they cost more than most protectors, but they are correct, and they work jsut fine.
from what I hear many don't run protectors since these venture specific ones are nearly impossible to get. But that is a risky gamble, and could leave you stranded if a stud nicked the exchanger, and could ruin your motor if you did not catch it in time.
Hopefully the 04 viper chasiised venture you have is not the same as mine, but I have been told by a couple fo dealers and parts/ service guys that it is all 2 stroke LC ventures that are different than the normal set of protectors.
Good luck
