What should I see for a voltage reading of the pick up coil. I have no fire at my plugs. Checked the 3 white wires coming from the stator and have 5-10 volts depending on how hard I pull the sled over. Basically, the harder you pull the sled over the higher the voltage. I then checked the output voltage of the pick-up coil and I get arouond 1 volt. There is just enough to move the needle. Does this seem right?

No spec on voltage just resistance..check them both
pickup coil 189-231 ohm @ 68 F
charge coil 0.36-0.44 ohm @ 68 F
pickup coil 189-231 ohm @ 68 F
charge coil 0.36-0.44 ohm @ 68 F
Thanks, I'll try that.
you need a good 3-4 volts, any less then that and the p/u coil is faulty

Great thanks. I have a spare one so I will try it out. Is it possible that pulling the sled over won't generate enough voltage to start the machine but if it was to start it would stay running. This started as an imtermitent problem where the sled was hard to start and sometimes had no fire. Once I did get it going it would run great and never quit on me. Then it got to the point where it wouldn't start at all.
Well, checked the resistance in my pick-up coil and it is zero or no reading at all. Check a used on I got and its 207 ohm. Looks like thats my problem.

yup i would say thats your problem..
Where are these charge coil and pick up coil wire coming from? Is this the stator? I am still running down electrical problems. daman you on line?

I had the same thing earlier in the season one a 2001 SX 700R. Except the pick-up coil had infinite resistance, not 0.

what are we working on,,your Viper?????Colorado Viper said:Where are these charge coil and pick up coil wire coming from? Is this the stator? I am still running down electrical problems. daman you on line?
Yes, I am working on a 03' Viper. Yesterday I took my coils to the Yamaha dealer and he bench tested each coil with a spark load and they all work well. I am heading for the mountains tonight and will replace the CDI from a friends sled once I get my machine to fail again. Reminder, newly rebuilt motor once she gets warm 10miles it will cut out but not die. Have checked out numerous wires and the such. I would like to put the Viper away this summer running. Will let ya know Monday if I have any success. Have been getting some help from the boys on this site, you guys are great. I just wish ya lived in my town.

Dennis, shoot me your email and i'll send ya some info on checking your other coil's,saves me from alot of typing.

Actually that was what I had as well. I was thinking that no reading at all was 0 resistance but now that I think about it that would be infinite resistance. My sled works great now.
