Hey guys I am new to Totallyamaha, but have been watching site for a long time. I am proud to be a member finally, and I am impressed by the way that this site is ran and the people seem to be so nice. I think this is a special place. I have a vmax sx 700 that I have had for about a year now, I have not rode it that much. Is there anything that I should be looking out for on this sled. Thanks in advance!!!!!

Overall, very good sled and probably one of the most reliable and longest lasting 2 cycle engines ever made.Check for cracks in the front w arm in the rear suspension as this has always been an issue at times.If this sled is stock a track and different skis make a world of difference.I suggest you check out the technical pages to familarize yourself with this sled also do some searches for things you'll find a ton of reading.I f you can't find what your looking for just ask and somone will be glad to help, this is a great site!

There where a couple of updates on the 97's, I have the service supliment somewhere but I know they offered larger bumpstops for the W arms for "aggresive" riders, they had a recall to ensure the bleeder screws where tight on the hydrolic brake, and also 4 screws on the flywheel under the recoil that needed lock tight. Overall the red head 700 triple is one of the best engines Yamaha has ever produced, there was some sparadic bearing issues in the bottom half and in 98 they corrected that.
There was also a recall to calibrate the clutchs if you choose to run the more durable 8DN belt.
I have all of this info somewhere, I can send it all to you if you wish.

get yourself a set of reed spacers or make them yourself and , your fuel mileage will go up ...

The leading (a.k.a. trailing) arm brackets that attach to the running boards would come loose on the 97's. The rivets loosened and the holes wobbled out. If they have been redone by a dealer there will be large 1/4" rivets in them. After those loosened on mine, I used 5/16" truss head stainless machine screws and locknuts, including under the footrest.
There was also a recall on something in the area of the front spindles on my Venture, but I don't remember exactly what it was. I do not know if the SX also had the problem.
The seat snaps would come off. Yamaha sells a replacement kit.
There was a hood reinforcement kit to prevent cracking at the rear corners.
I would add a skid plate. And my personal preference would be a high windshield from a Venture.

The bearing issues is something to keep an eye out for on the 97's. Also make sure you have it clutched right. I think they are notorious over rev'ers in stock form. I think the oil pumps are usually a little rich.
