Im looking at buying an Exciter. Yet everyone is telling me they were unreliable and had major engine issues. So was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this. If this is true is it fixable or not. Was also wonder how many KM's a Exciter gets to a tank compared to an Exciter SX or is there a difference.
Thanks :dunno:

Exciter

Yamaha made Exciters from 1976 - 1981 and again from 1987 - 1993. I for one have had both vintage and a 87 that was updated through 1993 with all the goodies. The 1976 would hold its own up to 75 mph then the 87 would walk. Great sled 87 - 93 for a smaller guy, I was 300 lbs and dwarfed it ! The Vintage Exciters had smaller gas tanks I think 6 - 7 gallon and the later sleds had a 8 gallon. Real numbers were in the 10 MPG figures so 80 - 90 miles and we were all looking for fuel.

Thanks for the input im preferentul to the SX and i only weigh about 105 pounds. I have a 94 phazer which is an awsome sled but im kind of looking towards a liquid cooled. Was also wondering if the tunnel on an EX SX is replacable found a deal on one that has a damaged tunnel. Thanks

I had a 1990 Exciter and put 7000 miles on it. It was completely reliable and never needed anything except routine maintenance. I have a 1993 Exciter II which i boought used in 1999 for my sons to ride. We've done several long saddlebag type trips on it and a lot of day trips. It also has 7000 miles on it, a completely reliable sled. There were some issues with the CDI boxes on the 87 and 88 models. You should be able to find a good late model exciter for a good price.

Exciters

Well my experiences with the Exciter's spanned the beginning to the end.
Had 76-78-79-80 then went SRV's till my 87, then I had a 89, 91,92 & last was the 93SX, & I would like that one back today!!

They were always dependable solid running sleds. While I never put more than 4,000 miles before I sold or traded, no problems.
Only time I had a problem was with the 92 when we tried a little port & polish & just leaned it down too far. Oops. :o|
I learned at that point that if ya dont screw with them & also open them up, they will probably last for a long time...LOL.

Fun powder sled for the wieght factor, but a bit under powered if your 230lbs!!

Good luck with your project. You should be able to get a straight chassis yet & it would be a good sled for you.

Ya thanks, unfoutuntly I didn't get it. Guy had already sold plus it ended up having like 8000k on it so. But ya im still looking. Thanks for the input
