So, where does yami mark their pistons with the part number?

Is it on the top of the piston?

I am trying to see if the original pistons are in my 97 600 twin. I know there were ring pin issues on the original pistons, and I don't want to take more than the head off to find out which pistons are in it.

A search by the VIN did not show that they had been replaced. AFAIK, they had a TSB, and not a warranty, so it would not show up in warranty work.

The warranty work search for the sled showed an aweful lot of other warranty work, but nothing regarding pistons. so far off the top of my head 2 mufflers (wtf???), ring gear for E start, and a starter came up on the search of warranty work.

fwiw, this 6000 mile plus sled still pulls around 125 psi for both cylinders, so that is why I would rather not pull the cylinders, and only the head.

You'll have to look inside the piston for "ART" marked on it, IIRC i saw that
marking on some OEM pistons last time i over hauled one.

unless somone else can add.......

if she's got 6k on her it's time to be opened up and refreshed

So "ART" is inside, is that for the original pistons, or the updated ones??

Yeah, if it had 6k on the originals, a freshening up would be a good idea, but I really doubt it has the original pistons in it.

Granted I did not do a leak down test on it, but it sure runs well, despite the extra oil that has been pumping through the motor.

It looks like Yami may foot the bill for the oil pump, which would be not expected, but I would gladly take it.

The 97' pistons were permanent mold cast pieces with ART on the inside, the 98' pistons were pretty much the same with wider ring lands, the AO" service piston is a forged piston with 8CR on the bottom of the wrist pin boss.

If you are not sure of what they are when you pull the cyl off the original pistons had lightening reliefs on the intake side of the wrist pin only, the AO pistons being much thinner do not require it, none of these pistons have makings on the top.

If you're going to rebuild the top end on this use nothing but the factory "AO" pistons, you will not ever wear them out.

Ahhhh I see....

thanks :)

I will investigate further to see what pistons I have, and whether yami has any record of piston replacement.

I did not have the dealer search, I had my retired Father do it as he ahs much more time to spare than I do.....otherwise I might already have all the info from Yamaha;)
