This has been gone through many times on the site but I still have questions. I saw a rear- rear shock on ebay for a viper er.The center to center of mounting eyes was listed as 18.75 inches. My 97 xt has the same distance. Does the other non er vipers have a longer center to center? Im thinking to get the longer travel the center to center should be longer hence the need for longer control rods and straps.I already have the center shock (small one) now Im after the rear (big shock). Can anyone tell me what center to center of the viper shock that I need should be.Any more info than what I have already read would be great
thanks

Viper shocks are a direct replacement for the Bag style shock found on your XT. What is wrong with the XT shock ?? I have put many trouble free miles on the bag shocks with no problems. I believe the Viper shocks are the worst replacement shock out there IMO.

The 97 and up Vmax XT and XTC have the same amount of travel as Vipers. (XT & XTC are long travel) The difference between the XTs and XTCs are the XTCs come with aluminum rebuildable shocks and XTs come with steel body shocks. The difference between the Vmax skids and the Viper skids isn't travel but its different bushings and newer shocks, but the size of the shocks and the travel are the same. I hope I was able to help
Thanks SS I was under the impression the vipers had more travel than the vmax. Could you expand on the different bushings? Are the viper shocks better in any way Than an xtc shock? Are any of the aluminum shocks adjustable on the compression or rebound?
Thanks

First on the different bushings I believe that as far a performance you wouldn't notice the difference, I think the difference is just what kind of material Yamaha used. The bushings I'm speaking about are the cross shaft bushings.
Second are the Viper shocks better than the XTC shocks, I couldn't tell you, I'm sure their are people who like the Viper shocks better and people who like the XTC shocks better. I have the XTC shocks on my SRX and I like them but I've never had Viper shocks so sorry I couldn't tell you.
All the aluminum shocks are adjustable for rebound or compression, but only by the way you have your coil spring set, the tighter the spring is wound the faster the rebound and the stiffer the compression. Also you have some adjustment by what slot you have the front of the rear shock in - top, center or bottom. I think it really doesn't matter what shocks you use Viper or XTC as long as you have them set up the way it feels best for you. You could always have them revalved for you and your riding style, they can do that when you have them rebuilt.
I hope I was able to help a little, I'm sure there is a ton of people on here that know alot more than me on this issue. good luck
