Does anyone know what pulse the 1980 Exciters are and if there is a electric tach that will work with it..
Thanx
John

THESE TACHS WERE VERY SLOW BECAUSE THEY WERE CABLE DRIVE. ESPECIALLY ON SRX. ALSO IF YOU BROKE YOUR WATER PUMP BELT , THE TACH QUIT. I CAN REMEMBER INSTALING A ELECTRIC TACH FROM A 1980 JOHN DEERE LIQUIDFIRE THAT WORKS AWSOME ON MY SRX. 3:16 (yammie tony)

I know the SRX is a 2 pulse tach but is the Exciter also a 2 pulse.. Do they make a 1 pulse tach. I have a Ski doo tach on it now and at full throttle it will not go over 5000 rpm. It seems correct at idle but full throttle reads low.

I put one off a polaris twin on my 77 exciter, looks like this

That is a 42 mm carb, and you have to use a throttle off of a 77 or 76 , they both had round slide keihn carbs, and i ordered a cable for it.
is that a mikuni, or the keihin? thanks

I hooked into the orange wire from the kill switch, but i think the gray wire also works. I don't think that it matters as long as it is hooked to the non- regulated side of the harness

A pretty good design from Yamaha for this reason. Kind of a trade off, but piece of mind. I broke a belt on my srx and wouldn't have known it unless I was useing the factory tach. They can get ugly with an overheat.
