I am going to do some head work and wanted to CC my SRX heads before and after I do the work. What is the best way? I have read a few threads on here where someone has mentioned filling the combustion chamber to the bottom of the spark plug hole with a fluid. So this is what I plan on doing.....

Jack up the front of the sled so the the tops of the head are level

Pull the plugs and starting with one cylinder, move the piston to TDC using a dial indicator to make sure it's right at the top

Fill a graduated cylinder with a known quantity of two stroke oil and pour it into the cylinder until it reaches the bottom of the spark plug hole

Measure and note how much oil was used by the amount remaining in the graduated cylinder

Lower the front of the sled back down and drain the oil out of the exhaust port

Repeat....

Am I missing anything? I imagine I'll have a fair amount of oil in the crankcase when I am done but I can't think of a better way unless I was to roll the sled over and pour it back out of the spark plug hole. I guess I could do that. Does anybody have any suggestions? Has anyone done this?

Thanks guys,

Bruce

the way you cc heads is to place a sparkplug upside down in a vise on the bench, then spin the head down on the plug via the sparkplug hole. You then take and smear a small bit of grease on the headsurface where it touches the cylinder, place a small peice of plexi-glass with a small hole drilled in it over the surface, the grease acts as a seal between the head and plexi- glass. You then use a cc syringe or burette and measure the amount of liquid the head will hold up tight to the plexi glass.

Actually you have to do both, you need to do it the way you outlined to get your installed/actual volume, then, re-cc the same head the way Don outlined to get your uninstalled volume to use as a baseline when cutting the heads.

Thanks guys, that was just what I was looking for. It looks like I've got my work cut out for me. My boys and I went for our last ride for the year unless I get my new heads CC'ed, cut, reinstalled, CC'ed again, etc. before too long. I can't wait to see what the Viper will be like to ride with some decent compression. Right now my son on my old '99 MM700 will steadily pull away from me on the Viper. It's amazing to watch that kid ride. He's twelve and and I'll tell you what, it sucks to have your son highmark you on hills! I have the longer track, 151 vs. 136, but he takes the cake. His 85 lbs on the MM700 vs. me at 240 lbs on my Viper. It's a little embarassing when he comes down and asks me why I can't climb like he just did. That's okay though. I have just as much fun watching him pull some good hills as I do climbing them myself. I can't even begin to imagine how good of a rider he'll be when he's 16. Lots of fun ahead of us.

Thanks again for the input guys!

Bruce
