I just had my Ebay account hacked into yesterday - I got the IP address of the hacker and I was wondering if you can get the physical address from peoples IP address or just their service provider - two months ago someone hacked my credit card off from I-tunes - economy is down and there is a new style of crime on the rise!!!

usually if they are smart enough to hack an account, they are smart enough to mask their ip addys. be carefull when looking for people. sorry to hear about the misfortune. ski

One of the correspondece had my IP address then the second one had an IP that come from Virginia - they had bogus basketball tickets listed under my account but Ebay did catch it right away so no harm done - the only pain in the as* is I had to go through and change my password on everything I use on the internet - I guess at the end of the day, what the hey are you going to do even if you knew who it was?? - I think there are people out there that do nothing else all day but sit at a computer and run scams - pretty sad!! :dunno:

It is sad, and there's alot of them out there. People have no respect for other's things nowadays. Unless you can get the service provider to hand over the log of who had that IP Address at that time you're out of luck. Like skidooboy said, even if you get that information, who knows if it will be the right person.

How did they hack your account? I would suggest scanning your computer for any malware, a reformat may even be best(not repair).

Ebay is getting pretty laxed any more with there policeing. I just won an auction on an item, and got to looking. The only other bidder was the first and secod to last bidder on every item this seller had ever sold on ebay. Ebay just told me to ask for a refund or get over it. guess the no bidding your item up doesn't count anymore. The seller also lists a Id addy, but is registered on ebay Canada, with a canadian address. Ebay didn't care. i just hope I get either the item or a full refund.

.......How did they hack your account?.......

I had a momentary lapse of reason!! - I got an e-mail from E-bay that said a member was trying to contact me about an item - I had no items listed and was not bidding on anything and should have known right then - however, in my own defense, the e-mail looked exactly like it was coming from e-bay - I logged in to get the message and bang, they had what they wanted - this was just after lunch - by time I got home they had listed the bogus tickets - I will hand it to e-bay because they picked it up right away and with the IP addy I'm sure they know where it came from - makes you want to drive to the persons house and open a can of whoop a*s!!! LOL - but no harm done so I'll move on - you just can't let your guard down for a second anymore!!

P.S. - Shortstop - that video clip from Pinks is the bomb - I was watching that when that happened and almost wet myself!! - everytime I see it I start laughing all over again!!

Rule of thumb is never, ever open any e-mails that look like they're from E-bay or Paypal. Even if they are for something you know that you bought or are bidding on. Always login to "My eBay" by opening a new window and going to www.ebay.com Any information that eBay needs from you will be listed there and any e-mails or payments that you owe will be shown there. I forward suspicious e-mails right away to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com, depending on who the e-mail is supposidly from. They will e-mail you back and tell you if it's a spoof e-mail or not and it will help them to track down the scumbags.

x2.......although I did have a suspicious email this year that turned out to be the real deal.......even though ebay thought it was a scam.....

I'm now on my third one this week - they have all looked the exact same and the e-mail address has e-bay.com in it - I forwarded the last two to spoof@ebay.com but have not gotten any response - the hackers are pretty good because the e-mails look just like a page from e-bay - same logo and everything - still not sure how the IP address works, but with all of the wireless stuff they could be sending the e-mail from any number of places - if you took your laptop to Starbucks and sent an e-mail, would it show your IP or theirs?

When you are using the Internet at a place like Starbucks or something like that you are surfing the Internet via a Router that they have installed so several people can surf the internet at the same time. Each person using the Internet is assigned a Private IP Address from the router that Starbucks has installed there. Typically the IP Address of your computer will be something like 192.168.1.x(with x being anything between 2 and 254). This varies from place to place but 192.168.1.x is the most commonly used IP Address numbering scheme. For example when you go to www.totallyamaha.net, the packet(information) leaves the IP Address of your computer(we'll say it's 192.168.1.2), at that point it is directed to the LAN, inside, or private(whatever you wanna call it) IP Address of the router. At that point the data is then transferred to the WAN, outside, or Public(once again, they all mean the same thing more or less) IP Address. Then the data is tranferred from the router out to the Internet. When the TY server receives the packet from your computer it actually has the IP Address of the router that you are connected to in that packet. Your IP Address is not shown.

So to answer your question in Leman's terms, NO, your IP Address is not shown when you send an e-mail from Starbucks. Now let's say your are connected at home directly to a modem(No router or LAN installed). In that case your IP Address would be attached to the e-mail.

It can be hard to understand without some education about how it all works. If you want you can forward the e-mails to me and I can most likely tell you just by looking at them whether they are real or not. Put "TY" and your name in the subject or something so I know that they're from you.

Anymore questions just ask.

You pretty much answered my question - just as I suspected, these people could roam around with a lap top sending this bogus stuff out and be very, very hard to track down - as far as reconizing the e-mails, I just let my guard down (too much Tequila on vacation!! LOL) - it won't happen again - it is just a little sad that trust has fallen to such a low level in this world!! - I guess I'm just old school!!
