I just picked up a "project" 97 SX 700 and upon a quick overview I noticed that the bellypan seems flimsy and it sags so the hood doesn't fit it quite right. Is this a known issue or is there a fix?

I had a 97 SX that was the same way. Mine was caused by blown belts and such. There were a few torn spots and stuff in the pan that made it weaker.
To solve the issue, I first used extra straps from SLP (if I did it again I would use yamaha ones that matched better). I did not like how the straps looked though so eventually I replaced the bellypan's with a used set that I found here on TY. A few rivets and some time later they were like new. Two solutions to one problem, all depends what you want to do.

Yeah, the bellypan has seen some abuse over the years. There is a melted spot where the muffler laid on it and who knows what else. The sled was ridden hard, so I'll be replacing parts as the budget allows. Thanks for the tips.
