So I recently rebuilt my top end(pistons, rings, one layer gasket) and got everything back together and running. However, the sled will only run at about 6,800 - 7000 rpms and will never get past the "low gearing" on the clutches leaving me with a top speed of about 35-40.

So is the issue in the clutching? or is there something wrong with the engine and because it doesnt reach a higher rpm never gears up???

Sled is a 96 vmax xt.

I know this is a little vague but any thoughts would be nice. Clutching suggestions for a stock vmax and one layer head gasket also welcome.

Thanks!

take apart and clean the clutches. you might have some binding there. that motor should peak at 7800rpm. if the clutches are clean and move freely then you remove tip weight. sounds like you have flat spots on the rollers and or worn parts in that primary.

you took the 5 layer gasket and put in 1? Go back to 3 the 8CA gasket, I would check the primary because those sleds love to eat clutches, did you go through the carbs? main jet fall out?

The gasket doesn't seem right. I believe you take 1 layer out not run 1 layer.

The Rollers are notorious for wearing out on these Vmax's so you will want to inspect those regardless, as well as clean the carbs and see what your find in there.

3 layer gasket. removed one layer. (Sorry for the confusion)

I'll pull the primary this summer and replace the rollers and sliders. Pull the carbs and clean them up as necessary. Hopefully that fixes the issue...

Thanks for the responses!
