If the speedometer needle jitters while you're driving it down the road at all make sure you get it fixed for free or get a discount.
Once the speedometer starts doing that it's only a matter of time before it goes out. It will cost you $400 to get it fixed unless it's under 70,000 miles, then Chevy/GMC will fix it for free.

Does that apply to all 2500 chev/gmc trucks from 2001 - up? Good info - thanks!

I order IPC's(Instrument Panel Cluster) all the time at work(Chevy dealer), we replace about 2-3 per week. Really depends on the vehicle sometimes youll get lucky and wont have a problem and sometimes you will. I see IPC getting replace mostly on GM trucks and passenger cars(Impala's and Malibu's). One thing I do see alot with high mileage(100K-Up) D-Max's is injectors being replaced which can be very costly with injectors varying from $250-$450each. Then the cost of all the gaskets involved to do the job and the labor to boot.
Me personally would not buy a D-Max mainly cause I see them in our shop on a regular basis mostly for heavy work($$$$) to the motor. But most of these trucks are being used for what they were built for, TOWING big loads weather it backhoes or 3 place car haulers. Theres alot of diesel's owner out there that have zero problems with there truck but that could be cause all there using it for is daily driving or hauling small loads that a 1/2 ton could pull. But when you start hooking up to 13000lbs+ parts will end up needing replacment sooner than a daily driver weather it FORD, CHEVY, DODGE.
As much a I hate Chrysler, Cummings is the only reason I would buy there truck and is the only diesel on my list to buy.

Only thing to watch out for on those 2 engines is a heavy foot(MPG). Besides that I rarely see 8.1L's in the shop at all and the only thing I see being replaced on a the 6.0L is lower intake manifold gaskets cause they are known to leak. After the 5.7L(350), Chevy did nothing but improve there OHV V8 gasers esp. reliabilty and power wise.
