Last chance before I bring it to the dealer on Sunday. 45HP Mercury 4 cyl 2 stroke. Will not come up to full RPMs.
cdi...check to if it's cracked...common problem...heat the cdi box with a heat gun as you rev it up...you'll notice at the right expansion it will rev right out, then start to cut out...get a used one & try it out...pull the plugs...I bet you have a fouled plug, lower one...

Ok. I have time. When the motor is "bad", it is hard to start and will not come up to full speed and the boat will not plane.
When the motor is good, it will start pretty easy and the boat will come up on plane after a short time.
Sometimes it will not plane for quite a while, then it will "kick in" and start to go.
For two trips this year, I was still on last years stabilized fuel--it ran bad. This weekend, I put in 10 gallons of fresh 93 octane and after running it for a few minutes, the boat planed and ran pretty damn good for a while. For the rest of the day, it was kind of on and off.
So, if it is the CDI, do you think the fuel quality contributed to the problem?
Incidentally, I'm not even sure it HAS a CDI! It has a stator, coils and a switchbox. I have a Seloc manual and it doesn't even mention CDI'S?
It is a 1986 Mercury 45 HP "Classic 50" 2 stroke 4 cylinder.
Since it ran better, we did not drop it off at the dealer. (102 bucks an hour labor rate).

Here is the part # you may need if I got your info right...#332-5772A7, supersedes #332-5772A2 SWITCH BOX ASSEMBLY It's pricey...over $300 bucks...look for a used one...or if a friend has a similar engine, just swap it out...I would bet you it's this part...
when your engine dies, pull the plugs...you'll notice one or more plugs are fouled & always the same one(s)...& usually starts to die out after the engine is run hard (hot)...late afternoon...never in the am or cold mornings...
Good luck & keep us posted...
