I was wondering if the new Yamahalube 3 has TC3, and secondly i wondered what exactly this spec means? i see it in some non synthetic oils but not all, what is it, and is it in our yamalube2 ?

API-TC is a certification for two-stroke oils, awarded by the American Petroleum Institute. It is given after the product passes through stringent tests that determine the level of detergent performance, dispersion, and anti-oxidation. The highest level of certification for two-stroke oil is the "TC"-series.
I have never heard of TC 3, There is a TC-W3 which is for use in two stroke outboard motors. you are not to use a two stroke oil that is not rates TC-W3 in outboard motors.

I was told that as long as the oil said "TC-W3" it was ok to use for 2 stroke sleds.

Two stroke or two-cycle oil has many different grades.
NMMA TC-W3 or Two-Cycle Water-Cooled third generation. TC-W3 obsoletes TC-W & TC-WII. OIls with this spec do not use metal based additives and are ashless. This is an outboard specific spec. Is mainly used in Water Cooled, lower temperater conditions
API TC the only API spec established for two-cycle engines. It regulates lubricity, detergency, ash content and pre-ignition. Oils with this spec are typicly using metal based, ash producing additives.
JASO-FA is the original spec established regulating lubricity, detergency, initial torque, exaust smoke and exaust system blocking.
JASO-FB increases lubricity, detergency, exaust smoke and exaust system blocking requirements over JASO-FA
JASO-FC lubricity and intial torque requirements are the same as JASO-FB, however far higher detergency, exaust smoke and exaust system blocking requirements over that of JASO-FB
JASO-FD has the same requirements as FC but has far higher detergency requirements
ISO-L-EGB Same tests and requirements as JASO-FB
ISO-L-EGC Same tests and slightly higher detergency requirements as JASO-FC
ISO-L-EGD Same tests and requirements as JASO-FD
What does this mean to snowmobiles?
Most OEM 2 Stroke oils fall in either the JASO-FB/ISO-L-EGB (good) or JASO FC/ISO-L-EGC/API TC (better) catagoys, The toughest spec currently obtainable for two-cycle oils is the JASO-FD/ISO-L-EGD. Any oil that does not list a rating (including OEM oils) means it has not obtained these ratings, otherwise why woud they not list them on the label.
