I had previously done the head gasket mod on my 700 using the two non-metal pieces of a used gasket. The parts had some material worn away but I tried them anyway. After about 2500 miles the one cylinder began to leak. After disassembly I found that it was actually leaking between the two pieces of the gasket.
I now have new gaskets to work with, should I go to one layer only?
If I use two again, do I coat both sides of both pieces with the tack spray?
Thanks,
Al

Yes coat both sides with the spray tack. And I would only go with 1 layer if you have triple pipes...

No pipes.
The instructions in the Tech Section say to use one layer "except" if you have triple pipes, are you saying the same or opposite?
Thanks,
Al

1 layer is fine without pipes.... as long as the jetting is correct!!

I went with two layers again. This time I made sure the "bumps" on both layers were up, both the same.
I inspected the gaskets from my last attempt and noticed I had put them opposite, top layer bumps up, bottom layer bumps down, because that is how they were stacked on the stock 3 layer.
I am guessing that because the bumps were opposite I didn't get proper fit and coolant got between the layers, also quite a bit of the coating was worn from them so it could have just been the fact that I had used gaskets that weren't in prime condition.
I have yet to fire it up as I still need to add coolant back in. I did get through the carbs and found some blockage in the jets. Now all I need to do is throw the exhaust back on and it will be ready to test.
Heat is here now so it sure won't take long to build up the temps but it sure made it nicer for garage work as opposed to Nov..
Wish me luck or skill, probably luck.

Leaking coolant at head bolts
Got everything back together and is running ok. I did notice coolant coming out from the treads of the #1 bolt, did I do something wrong?
The fluid is actually coming out on top of the nut, not underneath so it is definitely coming up the threads.
I noticed some leakage under the bolt areas of the cylinder to the case in a couple spots but a slight tightening eliminated it. I think using a torque wrench made for "0-150" ftlbs may not be as finely calibrated in the 0-20ftlb range as I would like.
Do I need to redo the gasket?
Is it possible that it will seal after a few hot/cold cycles?
If I do have to pull the head, can I reuse the gaskets even though they have been high tacked?
Thanks,
Al

I would have use gasket spray as noted in the tech area to help stop leaks.

I did use "high tack" gasket spray as noted in the Tech Sect., both sides of both parts of each gasket, should there have been some sprayed on the bolts?
No need to do the bolts... strange, may have to take her apart, did you get the alignment pins back in the correctly?

I have taken my heads apart and reused the same 2 gaskets many times and never leaks......spray it with a good coat of gasket spray and torque your heads....never a problem for me.
