I just recently bought a 89 exciter 570 that does not run I got it cheap in hopes of fixing it up to ride it cranks over but does not have any other electrical power no dash lights headlight spark anything and I was wondering
if this problem has happened to anyone else and if there is anything common I should check
Thanks in advance

find someone who has a exciter like yours and swap out the cdi box. that is where i would start

Testing the CDI is a good start.
Get a good ohmeter and test all of the components (disconnected of course). Specs are in the service manual.
I would start with the stator.
Is it electric start? If so did you check the voltage?
Post some pics, and the VIN if you can.

It is electric start. I will try to check the cdi tonight. This might be a dumb question but when the key is turned on are the lights supposed to work or
do they not come on until the sled is running?
do they not come on until the sled is running?

Lights do not come on until sled is running.
All the "key on" does is "allows the ignition to work"
As others have said, most likely the cdi.
Good luck, keep us posted.

CDI specs? I didn't think there was any, do this first, go to the CDI, right before it there are the TORS wires coming from the carbs, blk and blk/yellow, unplug them and loop them together, check for spark, if not, then leave them looped and unplug the kill wire ant the CDI, crank it again. Doing these simple tests will bypass all the switches and safety circuits on the sled, which is most likely the problem. The only 82M style CDI I ever replaced was one in a wreck................
