97 sx 700, from the fiche, it looks like there are no bushings in the "clamps" that hold the steering post in place. One is up high and the other is behind the engine. There is a lot of slop in the lower one. Is this common? What has worn out? I haven't had time to yank it apart, but I figure someone here knows. Thanks!

Check the rivets that hold the front heat exchanger in place. The lower mount for the steering post is actually welded to the heat exchanger. If these rivets loosen up then the exchanger can actually rock back and forth enough to provide significant slop in the steering. Also there should be 2 piece nylon bushings at both locations.

The top mount is on the steering gate, make sure this is not cracked or broken.

OK, so the two "clamps" in question are actually the large white nylon bushings! I pulled it apart yesterday. Covered with grease, I couldn't originally notice this, plus the fiche is just a picture. They are $2.20 a piece at Highlands and I'm happy! Also, all the parts in the pivot arm/control arm are worn out. The sled is coming together...
