I had an 03 RX-1 that I sold in the spring. I found it too tippy and heavy for my liking. I'm looking towards an SRX and was wondering what year, size and model I should be looking at. I'm 6'4" 240 lbs and trail ride only and don't go too crazy on the sled. Any suggestions would be great. I found out after the fact that my RX-1 was a big oil burner because of the rings of that model year and also the suspension wasn't up to par so thats what I'm trying to avoid with the next sled.
Thanks!!

if you want a srx, i would personally try to find a '01. they have the seperate hand and thumb warmer dials. the 98-'00 models only have 1 dial to operate the hand and thumb warmers. the '02 models had a dcs sensor, that seems to give owners more grief than help. so, i'd say look for a clean '01. if you get a '98 or '99 model, make sure its a 700. they made a 600 in '98 and '99. just my .02.

what year were the rx-1's junk/oil burners? was it '03? did yamaha ever fix the oil burning problem for '04 and '05?

i had an ap[ex that i found the same problem w/ it being tippy. thats why i went back an got an srx 700.

if you trail ride & didnt like the suspension in the rx-1 i wouldnt get a srx.considering how tall you are & your wieght i dont think it would be the sled for u.you ever think looking at a viper? or even an sxr??

I have a 2000 SRX 700, and it has dual switches for the hand/thumb warmer.

it is also for sale.

They didn't fix the RX-1 ring problem until 05. Whats the difference between the SRX and an SXR/Viper? Do any of them come in a 136" track?

I'd have to agree with the suspension thing on the SRX. If you found the RX-1 suspension to be below par, don't consider the SRX. It's a sweet sled for flat trails and high speed running. If you were considering upgrading the suspension on it that's a different story, but likely out of the question. I now have the SRX for the smooth, fast days and just bought a rolling REV chassis to put an 800r motor in for the aggressive/rough days.

i've never seen a 2000 srx with dual warmer controls.
I've seen older sleds where people have converted from a single control to two seperate controls. A worthy improvement I would think ....

I think I might try to get ahold of a Viper with a 136" track. Any year better than the other? If hand warmers are the only issue I could put the Powermadds on.

04 "S" model came with ohlins front shocks and already had revalved softer rear shocks. Some people complained about the stiff ride on the older vipers. The "S" model didn't come with a 136 track though. You will have to look for a converted one, or find a Viper Mountain. I have a stock 04 and an extended to 136 04. Both great reliable machines. I'v had no problems with either one. They have about 4000 miles each. The only drawback is the "S" model doesn't come with electric start or reverse, but can be added on.

I say avoid the '98 all together, and that way no crank gremlins...

I really love the decals on my '99, I find them the nicest ones out of any year, BUT I agree about separate hand/thumb, which is why I separated mine into 2 circuits...fairly easy to do

The biggest benefit to '01 is the DUAL HEADLIGHT...i always wished my '99 had 2 bulbs
