Intermittent Tach and Display XL1200 riva 98

When riding the PWC the display comes on intermittent and when it does the tach is intermittent only displaying the RPM every so often and most the time no RPM display at full throttle. Any one every seen this? Any help much appreiciated.

Check the power to the gauge when this happens. Probably should get a service manual.
