I would google some of the technical terms associated with the products and processes that you work with and then contact the companies you find directly. Ask for the president, tell him about your background and skill set. Repeat over and over till you get a hit.

I know I'm always more impressed when contacted by a job prospect directly as opposed to going through HR. It shows motivation.

... you tell President of company X that you have expertise in these "other" areas and that these new capabilities are a great way for him to expand the business ... possibilities to capture niche markets ... become the go to company for a variety of related services ...

Now you are not only showing motivation, but demonstrating a thorough understanding of his business and the local market. That's the guy that stands out from the rest because he's not just looking for a job, he looking for a career and he's got the company's interests in mind.

Give it a try, you might be suprised at the result!

Michigan????? Our unemployment rate has set a all time high, finding steady work here is going to be tough.

True but I hear that Gaylord Ford Lincoln Mercury is looking for a Mechanic.

Excellent point, I wish I'd said that, and that's funny because I'm usually saying "I wish I hadn't said that"

I have looked into moving north for the exact same reasons. after talking to different companies i have come to the conclusion to stay in chicago-area make good money and retire early with a great pension. 12 more years and we are north bound for good!
It sounds like we are in a very similar field.i am a carpenter, specializing in concrete construction but i can cover all aspects of the field in side jobs. pouring , drives, patios sidewalks, resuface garage floors stain older concrete. when speaking with companies up north they all wanted me but at about half or less than my salarie now with absolutely no bennefits...health, dental, eye or pension.
I wish you the best of luck! It would be great to see it work out for you!
