OK I got this 03 Viper 700 from my friend last year and I think it needs some clutching help. I was hoping that it might come somewhat close to my XFire 800 but that must have been a bad dream. Does anyone out there know a clutch setup that will wake this overweight monster up. Right now I believe everything is stock. Most of my riding is on trail and the occasional lake race or two. I hoping there are some Yammi Guru's out there that can help. Thanks

get some good primary weights like heel clickers, heavy hitters, or polaris weights. get a hi-tech er secondary roller with a 50/46 helix and cat red/white secondary spring. let 'er hammer.

there will be some guys telling you to get a 51/43 helix and green spring at 60-70 deg. screw that. the other setup is better.

Heel Clickers

Do a search of my posts.......Yamiman and I argued about a set up last winter for a while. Both set-ups are good.....mine is better for all around trail riding. LOL!!! Yes, if you think your heavier Yami with less power is going to beat a Crossfire 800 I think you must have been dreaming. The heel clicker set up, however will change the sled for sure. If you cant find it by searching then send me a PM and I'll dig out my notes.

I've got a great heel clicker setup that works amazing for backing up. Let me know if you are intereseted. Just make sure you strap up your snow flap or she'll be gone the first time out. Nothing like front wheel drive baby! You may also want to disconnect the dam beeper, gets annoying on a long ride.

Your quick!

OK, sorry, it was YamerDown that I argued with! LOL! Anyway, either one of our set-ups are good. Both have their pro's and cons.

Thanks for the info. What would you suggest for heavier weights. Can you tell me what the correct stock setup is in these machines as well.

Here's my recommendation

Here is exactly what I use in my stock viper. 40-10BY heel clickers with a red HC primary spring. I use 4 grams heel, 2.3 grams middle and 3.4 grams tip. 15mm rollers (or 15.6 would be fine too). A 48-34 Dalton helix with the stock (red) secondary spring at 70 degrees. If you find that the sled over shifts (RPM's a little low) then wrap the secondary spring to 80 degrees. There you go.....all my testing.....hours of time.....it's all yours......have fun.

PS: When the Crossfire breaks down at least you'll have a fun reliable Yamaha to ride!

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try and let you know. as for the XFire breaking down well lets see here... no Yammi, no Poo, no Polaris aint beat it yet and she runs like a champ, give'er some at about 40mph and up goes the skis. maybe I should face reality there's nothing like a cat, I just thought I'd give Yammi a try with all the hype.

Lol!

Fantastic! 40 MPH and no way to steer! Sounds like a typical cat. All motor (as long as it stays together) and poor handling! Talk to me about reliability after you beat that cat through the bumps for about 7,500 miles.

Stop it. Even my buddy who owns Yammi's can't believe the way she runs and out handles his Yammi. But regardless I'm here to get my Yammi to run at least close to my cat. It'll never be a cat but hopefully I can get it useable before I sell it.

Make sure the engine is producing max power and the mounts are not broken. You gotta start with the engine to make sure you are getting good power to the clutches before trying to tune them.

If you are simply phishing, good luck at this site.

Boy, that's not exactly the way to butter up the Guru's on a Yamaha site, especially for a new member. Good luck with that help! ;)!

Yeah I know but it's all in good fun. I really do appreciate the feedback from this site thank you. And I actually have another question about the factory weights. These have the two rivit looking things in the weight and on each one of them they are what looks to like worn down on the right side of each. Is this normal. The sled only has about 1800 miles on it. And what are the actual weights of them. They say 00. Thanks again

Oh boy

You don't have a lot of experience with clutching do you? I'm surprised since cat twins go through clutch bushings like I go through underwear! LOL! Anyway......those weights have more than just "00" stamped on them. They probably say 8EK-00 which is the part number for stock Viper weights. Never mind what they weigh and about getting heavier ones. HEAVY is not always the answer.......it's profile AND weight of the weight that drives the bus. Go on the tech pages and you will be able to find the weight of the base weight and the tuning rivets that are in there if you really want to. Better yet, just chuck them in the garbage and buy some Heel Clicker like I told you. Lastly....those things in the holes are the tuning rivets which can be exchanged for heavier or lighter depending on what you are trying to accomplish. Nothing is "worn down" the rivets get installed and then peened over.....that's what holds them in place......yes, it is normal. Yamaha invented the adjustable weight and that's what they are......another example of intelligent engineering on the part of Yamaha. Finally, as Ding mentioned above (and he makes a good point) make sure the power valves are clean and inspect the motor mount on the front left hand side of the motor....they are notorious for snapping the bolts where the steel bracket bolts to the motor case. Also, vipers did not come with a motor stop. You NEED one. Buy an SRX style motor stop and install it. If you really want to be thourough (and there is no electric start on this sled) then replace the front left motor mount with one from an SRX which will have three mount bolts instead of one and wont break again.

Most of the info will be in the tech pages (link in my sig) including stock rivets and weights for that model, poke around in there a bit.
