i have a older but good shape 159 ekholm suspension for my 04 mtn viper and am considering shortening it to a 151 proir to install. Thinking that the jump froma 144 to the 159 would be too much.
Just wondering if this would be a good idea or if it would weaken it too much being cut and welded back together. Also since the track doesnt come around the rear axle at a 180 deg angle Im not sure how much too shorten it.
Any input appreciated.

It should handle the 159 just fine. If you are a little under powered, add pipes. I wish I had a 159, I need more track.

It can be done fairly easily, length is proportional to track length. Like A K MtnViper said you can really never have too much track (well unless all your doing is groomed trails)...................SRXtreme
I would stick with the 159 track. It is a misconception that you need big power to turn a long track. The difference between the 159 and 151 is acutally only 4" of track on the ground. If you weigh the 159 and the 151, I bet the 159 is lighter. Usually a 159 will be a newer design track.
I have a 94 Vmax 600 that I extended to a 159 and it works great. I geared it down a bit and the sled climbs like crazy. Remember most Yamahas were over geared from the factory and really come to life with a lower gear.
Hope this helps
