Hi, newbie on this side but been riding rx1 since 05. I have always been wanting a srx 700 and a 98 has come up for sale in my area for $1500. what to look for on these machines? I have heard of crank recalls--will Yammi still honor these if not done? I really want a 2001 but this may have to do.
If you can wait for the 01, do it. The 01 vs. the 98 has a ton of upgrades including motor, crank, heads, cylinder porting, longer and relocated power valve cables, dual heater thumb hand controls, 300 watt dual beam headlight, better track, heated carbs (better skid I think)
The list goes ON AND ON
Your RX is quite the luxury and would keep riding it over the 98 but if you can swing it and keep the RX and buy an 01-02 SRX go for it

i dont think the crank would be done by yamie under the recall as ive checked about mine and where its a 98' its too old.
If your serious about this sled, get the VIN # and go to a dealer to see if the crank was done. 99% of them were.
I could be wrong but I think it was a pretty hefty recall on the crank and Yamaha would still honor it. They dont want to leave a bad taste in their customers mouth over something that was that big 10 years ago

NO WAY YAMAHA WARRANTIES THIS. THEY WILL SUGGEST YOU SEE YOUR LOCAL DEALER FOR A 2009 THOUGH. 3:16 (yammie tony)

What is THE BEST year for the SRX?

Best year for the srx's i would have to say would be the 2001 and 2002's, As said above they come with items that were not on previous srx models 98-2000.... I like the dual hand/thumb control warmers.... The dual headlight is so much brighter then the older single one, i never need or use my high beams on the trails b/c the low beam is way brighter then the older single headlight on high beam.... I believe the 2001-2002 had about 5-7 more hp then the 98 also... Not like thats a huge difference, but its there.
One of my friends is a Yamaha dealer and he told me a few years ago that YAMAHA would NOT HONOR the recall because the sled is too old... Like it was said before, 99% of them were done.. You could call up your local dealer and see if it was done if he has the time to look it up.. Only takes a couple of minutes to look up...
I suppose EVEN IF he looks it up for you,, it really doesn't matter,, because they won't fix it for free...
Just go with the 01 and ride with no worries and more luxuries.
I bought a 98 MTN SRX almost 4 years ago and the 98 motor was the first thing to go.
A friend and I put an 02 motor in it.

joe, it was '00-'02 srx's w/approx 5hp more than '98-'99 700 srx's. '00's had the dual headlight as well. i'm looking for a nice clean '01 srx myself. if i was you, i would get a '01 and drive it like tomseal said.....w/no worries.

Just for the record, my uncle bought a '98 Mnt. SRX brand new when it came out. It is now my cousin's sled. 5500 miles on it now, still runs strong. Only problem its ever had is needed a new stator about three years ago (other than the recall).

if you get a '02, i would jet it to the '01 specs and unplug the dcs.

found a 2001 for @$1600. Why unplug DCS? I thought this was a benefit on these sleds?
I really dont like the DCS.. It goes off for no reason sometimes.
I put in some stupid rich main jets and the DCS light was still going off. My plugs were very very rich and very oily after a plug check. However, I have work done to my motor so it may be more prone to go in DCS mode when it shouldnt. When the light comes on your losing power because your ignition is being retarted.
This has been a sore subject in the past and I dont wont to go too far into it.
DO NOT USE THAT DCS TO TUNE YOUR SLED!!!!!!!

the '00's don't have the seperate hand and thumb warmer dials like the '01 srx's have. also, the main jets on the '01 srx's are 148.8 pto and 147.5 center/mag versus the '00's having 147.5 pto and 146.3 center/mag. also, the color of the trailing arms and tunnel have changed, as with the decals.
