Viper-Rules!

Right at the end of the season I started to have issue's with restarting my viper. Sometimes you would have to pull it 15 times before it would restart. Never flooded itself. Did it once when it was cold and another day when it was warm. Also wouldn't idle very well below 2000 rpm and sometimes would rev up a bit on it's own. Now it is summertime and it is brutle to get it to start and idle. If you hold the throttle open above 2000rpm, it will run all day. I think the stator assembly has gone bad. Is there an easy way to test this. I don't think it is a carb issue, since I put on 2500 miles last season before it started to act up. Should the headlights and tail lights light up a bit when the rope is pulled? Anyone have any idea's, sled has about 8500 miles on it.
Thanks

Clean the carbs, the pilot jets are plugged. Maxdlx

I agree with Maxdlx, sounds like pilot jets. Does turning on the choke have any affect at all? If the choke helps it to run better from an idle it points to the pilot jets. Pilot jets are certainly the first thing to eliminate.
When my stator went bad, it ran fine on the bottom end, terrible in the mid-range, and fine again on the top end. This was when I had the hand & thumb warmers turned up on high. I read a post from MrViper that the warmers were causing the cdi to not function properly.
With the warmers off, my gauge pod was shutting off when I hit the brake and would come back on after the brake was released again. The gauge pod also would turn off and come back on if I switched between high/low beam.
Maybe your grass/asphalt racing this summer? If not, I hope your not starting your sled periodically in the summer to "keep it in good shape", this is one of the worst things to do during storage. I'm assuming that the hard starts are wearing on your mind and your trying to work on it.
There is an excellent write up on cleaning carbs, with pictures, by MrViper right above this section in "TECH FAQ" if you need some help with cleaning them.
