I just picked up an 01 SRX for local radar runs and drags. I want to warm up the motor a bit. I need advice on what porting and clutch type of work would be best. I have read that the stock pipes are very good. I really want to keep it sounding like a stock sled as much as possible. I would want to spend about $2,000 on the performance end. Thoughts and ideas?
Thank you.
Thank you.
.5 track, 168-192 chissles, depends where you are, if you have clean ice, less will be faster, if you run where people have chewed it up with bad setups that just spin, the more studs will be better. one key is to show up first with few studs, 144ish on untouched ice with a great setup and not have to tune sled in through the day as the ice gets worse.
extrovert drivers, trued up.
wave brake rotor, aluminum bottom gear
drill all your idlers that you leave on to lighten them up
clean all grease from bearings and use synthetic motor oil
be anal about clutches being clean, tight, aligned.
If you use filters, block off the secondary from the carb area to keep turbulance down.
get the sled low.
front end lined up to 0 toe.
use a straight, long carbide, dont use with rocker style ski.
cut a few fins off your water pump impeller. or
remove oil pump, shaft and water pump all together, block off shaft holes. run premix and use a small live well pump and small battery to circulate coolant through sled.
anything you can do to lighten up anything that spins from the secondary back will make you faster at the end of the track. taking weight off things that spin in the motor wont do anything for accelleration, concentrate on all the rest.
losing weight of the sled will help some but spend your budget on light spinning things first, then on the rest of the sled.
get a temp guage. this way you can run the sled up to the temp that it runs the best at then lauch at that temp.
VDO play back tach and a trap timer are a must to do good testing.
blueprint the all shafts, skid, every thing must line up on plane perfect, no binding.
take a broom, ice shaver, and clean out stand.
you will need a teather at most events.
mr viper can fix you up with what you want in a motor and clutching, check with rules where you run before you change something that will put you in the next class where you wont do as good.

All real good info for a drag sled but not as mutch for radar runs.Hard to do both really well with the same setup.ie gears/picks.But not impossable with a little wrenching.Still a thank you is in order i think!

BETHEVIPER,
Yes! Thank you very much. I'm a little overwhelmed with that amount of information. I think I'm going to need to pay someone to do these types of mods.

If this sled is going to be for only local radar runs and drags, I would go with a full race ported motor. Get rid of the oil injection and mix your gas.
You will have to run some serious octane in it.. AV gas

Stay away from AV gas. There are no lubricants in the fuel. Run proper Torco, VP, or Sunoco race fuel.
