Might have the chance to buy an '83 Inviter

This guy I work with has what he claims is an '83 Yamaha Inviter. He says its a single-cylinder.
If this sled is in decent shape, what would it be worth? Im thinking $300-$400. He was telling me today that he is thinking about selling it and buying something newer and faster, so I might have the chance to buy it.
If nothing else, it would be a good, cheap beater sled for riding in southern Wisconsin and it would get me back on a Yamaha.

If you have the year wrong and it is an Inviter. They are a pretty neat little cruiser. They are like riding a golf cart on snow. I use the one I have for just running around the yard doing erands. The liquid cooled single cylinder 300 runs flawlessly. Sips the gas also. If you don't want to go fast and not go over 45 mph this is a decent little sled.
 
Im just going off the year that this guy says it is. I was doing some research on it earlier this evening and the Inviter didnt come out until '86.
Im pretty sure its an Inviter, because last week he asked me if I knew what an Inviter was and when I said to him, "does that have the big ole tipped down, apehanger handlebars on it?" He kinda laughed and said, "yup!"
Based upon some of the pics of this sled Ive found, it kinda looks like its a luxo-cruiser. It definetly wouldnt fit into my stand-up riding style, but it looks like it would be comfy as could be for just cruising around.
I dunno, if he decides he wants to sell it I guess I will see.
I know that he says he really needs the money right now, so he might sell it but Im not holding my breath.
I was surprised to find these sleds are a liquid-cooled 300 single. It seems like especially in the old days, Yamaha ran really weird engines in their sleds.
433s, 570s and this LC 300 single. I grew up around Polaris sleds (nobodys perfect, right? :rofl: ), so for me it was always 250s, 340s, 440s, 500s and 600s.
If I end up getting this sled, I'll definetly put up some pics about it.

The Inviters kinda have a "cult" like following. they are so ugly, you gotta love them. If its in decent shape, I would pay $300 easy. In really nice condition i see them at twice that at most swap meets. I have always wondered how a "mod 300cc liguid inviter" motor would work out in our single clyinder mod class???????
 
Ya know Monty, thats a fine idea. I know a wrecker that has two of them parked in doors in pretty decent shape. I never bothered asking about them, just had a look and showed a very surprised friend who had never seen such an animal. G.

I was thinking that, depending upon what kind of shape the sled is in, $300-$500 would be a fair price.
Im still keeping an eye out for other vintage Yamaha sleds though. I wouldnt mind have an SRX, Enticer or Exciter to set up as a radar run sled.
The snowmobile club that I belong to had a radar run last winter and this guy showed up with an SRX 440 that was mint (and I mean showroom condition mint) and it was the fastest sled there. It even beat the Mercury Snotwister 440 (that was set up special for ice drags) that was there. That SRX was simply amazing!
 
The "floating arm chair" of sledding! First year was '87. Had one. They are cool! I think I still have a gasket rebuild kit for one. There was a nice one at Haydays for sale.
 
I saw a nice one this summer here in MN for $400. Really wanted to buy it "just becouse", but I kept my hands in my pocket. Someday I will have one to putt around on and MAYBE another motor....just to play with
 
Nah, Id leave it stock. I value reliability over outright performance. Besides, how many liquid-cooled 300cc singles do you see out on the trail? That, along with the unique design of the Inviter would make it quite a conversation piece.
 
Hi, I 've had 3 Inviters over the years. I did have 1 86 . Was a dealer demo, dealer said they got one to demo in 86,then available to public in 87. 86, 87 were gold,brown;88,89 were two tone blue. The 86 had a few differences over the 87. some had overheating problem solved by larger overflow bottle. My wife and kids rode them, got alot of looks on the trail back then, probaly stares today. Don't think motor parts are available aftermarket . I often wonder what kind of performance potental was in that little 300L/C. Anyway I'm ramblin on ,good luck in your pursuit of sled.
