hey guys i am gonna put some egt guages on my sled ..and need to know how far to mount probes from cylinder anyone know ?? i shopped around and got 3 new guages for 60 dollars each the end of last year nothing fancy no data recording just real time read out and alarm set point .....says they work with all probes on the market today ....but i dont say how far to mount them ,,,i thought i read somewere like 6 or 8 inches away or do they all differ from maker to maker ? i also got a digital temp guage that threads into the collant rail what kind of temps should i be seeing for a max i read vipers are like 140 150 max and 100 min...that sound about rite for a srx? thanks guys

I don't beleive there is a right answer. Although the temp change is pretty drastic with just a change of 1/2 inch or so from the cylinder, the important thing to do is base line the temp reading with a plug/piston wash reading. I installed mine about 8" from the exhaust outlet of the cylinder which allowed for installing the 90 degree probes on the underside the pipes.

I've read the same in regards to 6"-8" from the skirt of the piston but again, the important thing to do is baseline your temp readings with a plug/piston wash reading.

You may find (I did) your EGTs around 1350 dgrees with a 1000 ft. WOT run which at first glance is scarry, but after looking at the piston wash, I was pretty safe.

The oposite was true with them installed on my old mono-block XCR. They were located in the same general location yet I would never see an EGT of more than 1270. I found out the hard way that 1270 at the probe was too hot for the top of the piston. I also found on that same engine that the genuine pistons seamed to soak up less heat than the Wisecos I replaced them with. I would safely run around 1230 with the old and with nothing but a change in pistons (come to think of it, the Wisecos were .020" oversize) and relatively the same ambient, I saw the EGTs drop to around 1180. The humidity could have been different but I didn't have a means of measuring water grains at the time.

Again, calibrate the EGT gauge with a plug reading and you'll be okay.

I thought it was 8" I could be wrong.
Just a warning get your piston wash perfect then see where your egt's are for temps lot of people just go by egts and burn down.Checking piston wash is the best way.

ok what am i looking for never done a wash reaading ....how does that dertimine the distance ?

Look at the tech section... there are some pics of piston tops that spell out what to look for.
