Found an Exciter SX with heavy km's. Was wondering if it a engine rebuild was anything special. I've heard the Exciter have nicasil coating on the cylinders. Does this cause a problem for rebuilding.

Have you looked inside the cylinders to see if the walls are scored-scratched real bad?
What is your compression?
If there has not been a "meltdown" or "internal wreck", you might be able to just do a light hone job & new rings.
On a side note, I might have a complete SX 570 motor for sale here in amonth or so. Am building a special sled on the SX chassis but am using a completely different & newer motor so the stock 570 might be available.
Still on the fence whether to keep the motor or sell it.
Good luck with the sled.

How much is 'heavy' KM's??? And are there any other reasons you're thinking rebuild???

No I haven't seen the sled. I saw it in a ad for pretty cheap. Im capable of ding all the mechanical but was just wondering if it would be worth it to buy. Its got 16000 km on it. This seemed pretty high to me, most of the Exciters I know of are rebuilt after 10-12 thousand. I just love SX but am finding they are becoming harder to find.

Wow, that is alot. Man that's a tough call. Good news being it was good enough to get that high, but how worn out is the rest of it? Really depends on what you plan on doing with it. ie: restore/collector kind of thing or ride the piss out of it. I would think (and I'm no expert) that if the compression numbers came up good, it may be worth the risk.
I wish I'd have never sold mine.

racerrob6m, you'd better put that build up in the working log section! It sounds like my kinda job!

Yep!!
Hey Valin:
Yep, I will put it on the right area. It is going to be quite the project.
Just officially finalized the deal for the 97 Vmax SX with the 700 Hauck big bore motor that will be going in the Exciter SX chassis. Will be going to a snowmobile swap meet in Puyallup, WA, Oct 17 & 18 where I am looking for some misc parts & who knows what else I might throw at this thing. Primarily the skid, track & skis which are up in the air yet. We Will see..!!
I will post pics as I start with the official teardown of both sleds & chassis & the "building-engineering-fitting & "cussing" as this build/project progresses.
I have to finish my little shop area before I attack the project. Hope to have the shop done by mid to late Nov & then, game on!!
The good news for me is that this project sled does not "need to see snow this coming season....but..I am hoping to have it in some sort of test phase by spring snow.. We will see.
Here are a few pics of the 2 sleds which will be come one!!

Price I was quoted was around $300/jug. That was from Milennium (sp?) in Manitoba.

SX Motor Price
Hey Bam94:
Not sure what I will ask for the SX motor. Have not even started to take things apart. So, if you are looking for an immediate available motor, mine is not it. I am at least 2 months from doing any disassembly of the sled.
Will post here if I decide to sell the motor.
Good luck with the SX your looking at.

I am in the process of rebuilding my SX motor. I just put some stock EX jugs on so I can ride when the snow starts to fall around here. I'm boring to at least a 600cc motor so I'm replacing the cylinder sleeves and reporting. I'm having a shop do the resleeving and I'm doing the porting. I was quoted $200 total for the whole job. If the body is in good shape and the price is right, I'd say definately buy it. For a sled that's 15 years old, they can still keep up with a lot of the newer sleds. Racerrob6m, got any more pics of the tunnel extension? I have a stock ST skid I'm thinking about putting under the SX but don't quite know how to extend it.

Hey ace, I will take some pics & post them early next week after I get home.
Am gone thru the weekend at a snomo swap meet in WA.
I did not put the skid on my SX, but I can take the pics & dimensions for you to use.
What part of SD are you in?
I have friends in the Chamberlain-Pukwana-Mitchell area.

Thanks, I'd appreciate that. I'm in Sioux Falls.

racerrob6m-That looks like a stock skid with a lowering braket. How much lower is it and is the front lowered also to keep the track level?

Ace:
Sorry, I spaced posting the pics. Had a death in the family this past week.
Not really unexpected, my father in law in WI. had a long bout cancer, just was not sure when it would happen. So my wife flew back last week & he passed away this past Sat.
While I have not done the dimensions, here are a couple shots of the SX with the conversion of which I did not do. In regards to the struts being changed to allow for the skid, I dont think anyhting was done there. It looks all stock on the front.
Note: This whole complete tunnel will be coming off of this sled. I am just keeping the front portion & putting it on a newer tunnel.
I know, its probably a crazy plan but will see how it works. I want the front SX portion & will have a later model rear portion with a late model skid.
Anyhow, here are the pics. I will be out of town to WI for the funeral & will not be back home till next week Wed or so. As far as the dimensions, that will have to wait till we get back. We are packing etc. tonight & leaving in the morning.
Hope that does not cause any problems for you.

Hey racerrob6m
Could you also post some pics of the rear heat exchanger. I'm long tracking my SX to and was wondering how if you do move it back.
Thanks

Thank for the pix. Don't suppose you could get some pix of the skid mounting points and under the extension? I've read that most people cut the heat exchanger where it angles down, bend it flat, and reweld it. Or, try to find a long track exchanger from an exciter st or a long track vmax.
