My tach and fuel guage are dead on my 98 MSRX, tried a different tach and replaced the smoothing condenser (dealer recommendation) now I am out of ideas to try?? Anybody else run into this problem?

Did you check the wiring harness under the motor? Most all rub through and short out at some point. And my tach went crazy and died when mine rubbed through.

Goin to garage to check it out now!
Stator also. a lot of times the electrical signal to components will go but the part that feeds the cdi will keep working.....for now.

Found two wires that were rubbed through(red and brown) under the motor I have them patched up and the harness has some loom on it now, hopefully this fixes it, thanks for all of the info.

I had the same issue with the tach.It wasn't working when I bought it from this guy.He tried to fix it to,but put the wrong tach in it. So I bought a used SRX tach from a member here and it still didn't work.Pulled harness and checked everywhere I could.Could not find a rub thru or anything.
I went to the CDI noticed someone slipped a little of a wire back and must have be trying something.I took some wire I had sitting here and just wrapped it around the wire that was stripped back.Took the other end and tied it into the line that goes to the tach.It was like a jumper cable effect.Started sled and tach was working.Since I couldn't find any visible wire that was deformed,rubbed their or just broken,I carefully ran this wire permanent with loom and ties and taped everything good.It is still working till this day.nearly 2 seasons of riding.

I smell rub through
Exact same thing happened to me on trail last year, fuel and tach, ground was partially rubbed through. Re-routed harness along fuel rail, and dwon side of belt cover area.
