I have the service manual for the 89 Ovation which I'm rebuilding. The original motor was seized at one point. I'm not using that motor I'm swapping in another one with a clean carb. I know the carb for my "new" motor does not have the correct jets as they were way different from the book. Can't recall exactly what but I know it was way different.
I'm riding in/around the detroit area (ice fishing sled.) Altitude should be in the 600 ft range. Under 1000' I know.
The owner before my father-in-law reportedly was known to cut extra holes in the air box to let more air in. If that's the case, I'll make sure I have some filtering material over the holes or I'll fill them in.
My question is regarding the jetting. Should I jet per the manual? I've heard this is a fickle motor with the single carb setup. I haven't even gotten the old carb apart to see what was in it for jetting. The old carb was a former mouse house....
Any help would be appreciated. The motor should be back together this week and I might think about putting it into the sled if I get the carb sorted out.

if the airbox has been gutted or drilled, go up one size on the mains, and keep an eye on it. find the "sweet spot" by checking the piston wash. fatter is better for starters as plugs are cheaper than pistons. if this is just a utility sled, lugging gear to the ice hut, you will rarely be on the main circuit anyway. however, you want to avoid a lean spot in the midrange.

That's what I'm thinking. No problem burning a little more oil and gas. It doesn't need to be jetted on the edge.
