Speedwerx triple pipes with Viper Head Mod .........which one???

Hey all, I'm new to the forums over here but have been doing alot of reading on stuff i can do to my 04 Viper Mountain.

I purchased a set of speedwerx triple pipes:bling: , and it looks like in order to run them with the dcs on my machine, i will need to either modify my stock head, or buy and aftermarket head. I understand this mod, equalizes the compression ratio on all the cylinders, making jetting a whole lot easier.

This is where my question comes into play. What head would be the best to work with my 04? It looks like i have options, they are:

send out my stock head to bender racing for modifications to it: 179.00 or so...
buy a bender racing/peak performance head for 399 or so:bling:
buy a speedwerx head (if i can find one) i found a used one with 400 miles for 210.00
buy a hauck head for ???? dollars
or
buy a mega power performance head

What do you all think i shoud do?

I would like to save a little money, but i also know if i do something wrong in my setup it will cost me more in the end so im not too worried so spend money if it is justifiable.

The sled will be mostly used for boooondocking and offtrail riding up here in the U.P. so it would be nice to stay pretty reliable....

As for jetting, i think i have a pretty darn good understanding of setting up from a baseline and going from there. I raced motocross and ice raced dirtbikes previously so i know my way around keihn carbs, i am not too worried if i have to constantly jet to keep up with being reliable.

So, with all of my rambling here, if y'all have any input on what you would do,or if i am drastically missing something, (or if you have a head i should buy) let me know. Snow is coming soon..... (i hope) :letitsnow

Thanks!

P.s. then when im done with my jetting, i get to do my clutching :)

Speedwerx and Megas will not be compatible with your DCS unless you modify the waterail.

Cheapest and most available set up Ive found would be machined SRX heads with use of a Mega perf. Viper waterail($110 tops) but it still wouldnt be compatible with your DCS. Unless you weld a bung to the waterail for your knock sensor(DCS) to thread into. Its not hard you just need to know someone that has and knows how to TIG weld Aluminum.

For what you pay to have your stock head modded Id go with a A/M or SRX set up. The stock Viper head cooling was poorly designed and doesnt offer equal cooling to all the cylinders.

Search this topic, its been beatin to death on hear.

Okay, ive been reading other threads here, and it seems like there is alot of information on this subject. I can tig aluminum, so that is no problem for my situation.

Thanks for the input.

If i were to go with the SRX heads, would i have to send out my cylinders for machining and oring groove becuase i thought the SRX used a oring for a head gasket instead of a regular style gasket.

i have not seen the speedwerx heads around anywhere brand new. But i found that used head over on HCS for 210.00.... So that is an option i guess.... I just do not know if it would be the best option.

Opinions on the opticool head gasket if i go with SRX or aftermarket heads?

If your to use a steel gasket with SRX heads I would just go with 1 layer of the stock Viper gasket and have your heads set up using 1 gasket. Purpose of the opti-cool gasket was to equal out the coolant flow between all the cylinders due to the STOCK head design, that mixed with their(Bender) head mod makes them more reliable when PIPED than a Piped V using the stock head gasket and head. By you switching from one head to 3 seperate heads youll equal out your cooling, so the opti-cool would be pointless in my eyes.

You can gain extra cooling by switching out your Viper base gasket for a SRX base gasket, but for that youd have to remove your cylinders. The SRX gasket has smaller coolant passages than a Viper gasket which slows the coolant flow and lets the coolant take more heat away from the engine and into the exchangers.
