Got my I on a clean '89 Exciter. I don't know much about these sleds. Can someone give me some input on it? ie. the good, the bad, top speed, ...etc. etc. What year was the best/worst? What should i expect to pay?

89's were OK, thats probably the first year they were OK. The 87's were the fastest, until you changed the carbs and the 88's had cylinder issues, so an 89' should be OK. They're not fast, probably 80ish, a good PZ with an AAEN pipe and reeds would beat a stock EX. But if you find a clean one just to say you have one it would be a good one.
well the 2 best in my opinion would be the 93 sx exciters and the 87 exciters. 93 sx had more radical port timing and flat slide carbs 93 hp at 7750 rpm, adjustable strut wider front end ,better clutches.87 was first year ,looked the meanest without the vent holes in the hood.they were originally released with butterfly carbs but some had vapor lock issues so they had an update kit going to 38 mm roundslide with heated carb bodies and was standard on the 88 and up models. now when they went with the roundslides some exciters started to experience seizures, and it was determined to be due to engine vibration caused at a certain engine rpm at trail speed( frothing the fuel in the carb bowls causing air bubbles and leaning the mixture) some guy,s went with the water separater, deep well main jet extenders from polaris or cat if i remember right to get the jets down deep in the fuel while others bought these carb weights that a company made(cant remember which company, (sucks getting old!) that attached to the bowl drain bolts on the bottom of the carbs bowls .that is what i did even though i never had that bad experience with my first year exciter.i recently bought another 87 and a 93 sx. i have sx flatslides on it with a psi pipe and it sounds good but have not run it yet, but cant wait to try it.anyway i love exciters especially in the tight twisties! they are a fun machine!.did you buy it?
mine is an 89, upgradded with SX speced carbs, and a PSI single pipe. i have a comet 108 primary with 53grams and a blue spring, the secondary has a SX pink spring the thing moves pretty good and i can top it out around 85 even with 8 tooth drivers. i put a polaro x-12 in it last year, which IMO really ruined the cornering of the sled, i have XT adjustable front struts and i used an XT front sway bar until a weld snapped on it. my future plans are to widen the front end and ditch the x-12 rear, strongly considering going to a RX1 skid. i've got a 1" ice ripper camoplast track with plenty of studs, i fabbed up some front heat exchanger protectors, but the smaller 8" drivers keep them away from the exchangers just fine.
