This is what i do to my sleds. One quart of mobil one 75-90w gear oil 10.00 at walmart. Three br9es plugs 12.00 at autozone. Tube of mobil one grease for all fittings 7.00 at walmart. Can of carb and choke cleaner for use when cleaning the carbs 3.00 walmart. Inspect anything that spins or moves on your sled. Replace anything thats suspect, retorque studs on your track (if you have them) If you have square backers for the studs make sure they are square to the track if not they can pull through. If you dont do anything else to the sled CLEAN the carbs. A little bit of crap in the carbs can lean you out and make a nice hole in your piston. Im sure im leaving stuff out but i hope this helps you.

The 75-90w mobil oil in my first post is what i use to change the fluid in your chain case. It has a bolt at the bottom you pull it out and drain the oil and replace with the 75-90w. Fill it to the top of the STD line on the dipstick. I have reverse as well and have been doing it this way for years with good results.

Coolant is a little funner to change. On my VMAX 700 the drain is one of the bolts on the front of the water pump under the exhaust manifold. I had to remove the exhaust and I think I had the manifold off also. I found that you cannot get any sort of pan in there to catch the fluid, but I was able to get a plastic bag in there. I managed to catch most of the fluid in the bag and transfer it to a bucket. I say most, because of course the bag got snagged on a bolt and ripped a hole in it as I was removing it.
Drain it with the sled on the ground first, remove the fill cap to allow the engine to drain. Then you need to remove the seat, Lift the rear of the sled, and remove the plug at the rear heat exchanger. Make sure you have something to catch the fluid that will drain out of the exchangers. Once you remove that plug it will start to flow.

Another first sledder here. Just got a 99 vmax 500... the dipstick mentioned above I cant get it out the exhaust is in the way.. any suggestions.. also would a hand held suction pump work to drain chain case oil, or do I need to drain by the plug from underneath?
Thanks Swuff

Draining the chaincase: I always just pull the cover. I open up the hole right there in the belly pan a bit and let it drain out that way. Works for me.
I guess you could suck it out, but don't you want to look at the chain/gears/tension/etc.. anyway??

that would mean I also need a new gasket as well, right?
Nope. They are reuseable.

Drain the oil via the drain plug at the bottom of the case toward the inside of the tunnel, then pull the cover if you choose.......inspect and wipe/clean cover and rubber gasket and reassemble. Fill with approx 8.5oz of desired chaincase lubricant.
Chain tension should be finger tight then back off a smidge........hold the tensioner adjuster bolt in place with a 10mm wrench WHILE you tighten the locking nut with a 14mm wrench.
Ride on after that!!
